My first from Barhop Brewing, Judge Porter I tasted twice to make sure I got it right. First from a.flight of four and second from a 16 ounce can, both bought at Barhop's taproom in Sequim. Overall, the pizza was better than the beer; so I won't do a full place review. Besides, Barhop's story is common. Over 15 years ago, a home brewer goes commercial, adds pizza, then opens a gastro-burger joint and 4 years ago opens a second taproom/pizza joint. All good, pizza better, nothing great.

Judge Porter Looks slightly below average. Smells average, mostly sweet malt. Tastes introduce the balancing hops and saves the Judge from going overboard sweet (different for an American porter that often, IMHO, use too many hops.) Not quite medium mouthed, actually light.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich, dark brown hue with a pretty opaque body and a finger of frothy tan foam atop.

Smell: a nice mix of chocolate, caramel, and a little bit of astringent roast. There’s perhaps a little vegetal character from the hops here, but that’s not too unusual in the style.

Taste: moderately sweet, with some caramel and roast elements; there’s less chocolate character than in the aroma. It’s not too bad, but the bitterness from the earthy hops and the astringent roast don’t quite play together super well, though.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this beer kind of lacks the proper balance between the roast character and something softer, maybe sweeter. Maybe it goes well with pizza, though!

4 pack from the source. Unknown canning date.

Look - dark brown/black. No head RJ speak of.

Smell/taste - good sweetness. Chocolate notes.

Feel - thin

Overall - enjoyed this one a lot more that CitraSonic. Different styles granted, but this one I thought was a worthy effort for the home team (when in Port Angeles).

On tap at the brewery. I like the casualness of this place! Listed at 7.2%. Firm but tasty porter, works even with spicy pepperoni pizza.

32oz crowler dated 3/30/21 poured into a nonic pint on 4/3/21.

Pours 1" of tan head. Fizzy and dissipates quickly. Opaque dark brown with amber edges.

Aromas of chocolate, molasses, and cola. Toasty malt and a little roasted coffee.

Emphasis on sweet chocolate and molasses flavors with some burnt brownie edges and a slightly bitter finish.

Medium-bodied, smooth, and silky with a little carbonation.

A really delicious porter that balances some nuanced bitter and sweet aromas and flavors. Very good.
