Next up in our series of collaborations celebrating our 10th year, we got together with our buds at Albright Grove Brewing Co.

Ancient Trees is a farmhouse saison, named for some of the oldest species of trees that live amongst us!

Featuring malt from Riverbend Malt House, a delicate grist of Pilsen and wheat malt allows the Liberty and Huell Melon hops to impart spicy and floral notes. A classic saison yeast boosts flavors of honey, hay, pepper and bubblegum. This beer is package conditioned, giving it an excellent mouthfeel and helping retain a depth of character.

Reminds us of Alanis Morisette rocking the Kiel center in ‘99, or whatever TEEBS would say.

Bought from The Beer Temple. Poured into my Off Color tulip.
My 9th from Perennial, I may have had more "unique" saisons (6) from them than any other out-of-towner that specializes in saisons. (But with flawed short-term memory, I'll have to research that claim.)

Also contributing to a high Overall rating, Ancient Trees has two collaborations with friends/suppliers as part of their Big Anniversary (10th). This husband-wife shop has chosen a business path that does not rely on the hop-laden lean of the American palate that 90%+ of micros choose (my guess) ... or fall into to survive all today's Covid restrictions.

All that said, Ancient Trees probably has more hops than I prefer at the table. But consistent with their 10 years of experience in brewing for the kitchen, Perennial has made Ancient Trees work with Bob's world-famous soup, a great bread and a hollandaise-like sauce on asparagus. I think Ancient Trees will do well with summer fare. Having achieved all that, Perennial deserves an Overall 4.5, rare from me.

Ancient Trees is a great Looker, longevity in the glass also. Smells and Tastes are in concert, but the hops (and name) remind me of the Sequoias and the west coast IPAs and the pine resin hops. (I don't know if west coast hops are in here, but that affect seems so.) The finish is less piney and more citrus. Balanced still and light-mouthed, I can imagine Ancient Trees being liked by hop-heads. (As an inside note, I'm a devotee of Apex Predator; so I most like the juicy-fruit school of American saisons.)

But, I will have Ancient Trees again and weigh that against this review. And, I will continue to look for Perennial.

1/16/22. I bought a 4-pack @ Beer Temple and had another tonight with leftovers. Good pairing, but not great. As I suggested above in the edited review, I think I'll keep the balance for of the 4-pack for summer fare. A votre Sante'!
