Perennial Artisan Ales "Prism: Sultana"
16 fl. oz. can "BEST BY 05/20/23". Sampled on 08/06/23.
$5.49 @ Foodery Beer, Philadelphia, PA
Look: Hazy golden body; fluffy head of white. Better than average head retention and lacing.
Smell: Grainy, bready, spicy, citrusy, and piney.
Taste: Grainy malt is threaded through with notes of lemon/lime, pine resin, and spice. Firmly bitter with a dry, earthy, grassy, and spicy finish.
Feel: Medium bodied and crisp.
Overall: Decent enough but not head turning.

(16 oz can, best by 05/20/23; purchased cold single at Pinocchio's... poured into a teku)
L: pale yellow-gold liquid with a mildly milky, jade glow... the foam looks tight, but actually gasses out quick, leaving little cap... surprised this isn't holding head and/or lacing much
S: lime (citrus) and spice, turning more perfumy and floral as the head releases gas.. gets more (of course?) sultana (golden raisin) like around the edges, suggesting a fruity, sweetish accent... also a muffin-like grainy core begins to emerge, maybe a subtle note of fruity lip balm as well... overall intensity moderate-high, with the saison yeast character gradually becoming dominant
T: floury/flowery, dry shortbread foundation; dry aftertaste with a honey-touched floral, leafy overtone, with subtle pale malt and peppery background static... after about the third sip, the burst and swell of fruity hop resins up front demands more notice though, eventually, the bottom-cut dryness and floral spice (bordering on lavender?) and bready malt in the aftertaste leaves the more lasting impressions
F: resinous coating around a dry, airy corpus; yeast and hop spice slightly stinging the top of the palate, while the palate floor is essentially a wind tunnel, cold cave... velvet, silk, but leaving a somewhat shrill hum in the lower sinuses; lightly luscious, gassy, lovely
O: research for a (dry) hopped saison; made one at home a year ago, but the hops were bad, though the beer has potential... pretty darn solid saison and kudos to the lower abv approach... if I was local to them, I'd probably look forward to trying all the iterations of this brand; quite light and flavorful (2087)
