Spring Street Saison is a Belgian style farmhouse ale. The Saison is our flagship brew that helped spawn the formation of Avondale Brewing Co. Our Saison is brewed with our proprietary house yeast, a 4 malt blend and traditional Slovenian hops. Our unique brewing process along with the combination of the finest ingredients creates a thirst quenching brew with no equal. True to style this unfiltered ale has a coppery golden color and rich malty backbone that creates a unique farmhouse brew. Flavors burst with tropical fruit that combine with hints of spicy and peppery notes that are derived from our house yeast. One sip and you will fall in love.

served on-tap into a pint glass @ Suds of the South beerfest

Pours a vibrant, golden yellow color. It doesn't appear to have the attenuation that this style needs, as it looks a touch thick when I swirl it around in the glass. But that's a minor complaint. Two fingers of rocky bright-white head sit on top and sit around for a spell. It looks good.

It also smells good. Most American saisons are pretty average or terrible examples of the style. Spring Street Saison doesn't mess up in the usual ways that American saisons mess up. This has a dry, pils-based malt bill. The hops are steely and European. It has a yeast profile that makes a lot of sense for the style: baskets of stonefruit, clove, and astringent band-aid smells. It's simultaneously plasticky but juicy. That means they did something right.

The taste follows the nose, but almost completely without subtlety. The stonefruits here are tasty, but dear Lord are then a lot of them. There's also too much of the astringent & spicy side of the yeast. This actually reminds me of an improved version of New Glarus' Imperial Saison they brewed five years ago or so for their Unplugged Series. That beer, which I hated, was cartoonishly fruity. Spring Street Saison is fruit-forward but still drinkable. If this were a wine, I would say it is "overextracted."

The mouthfeel is the weakest aspect of this beer, it's only misstep. It's too thick and under-attenuated relative to what this style should be, ideally. Which makes sense; mouthfeel is the hardest-to-achieve aspect of Belgian styles for American brewers, it seems. The thickness is really apparent the more you drink it.

Overall, this is a solid American Saison (speaking of, should "American Saison" be its own style? Taking these beers on their own merits rather than the stylistic conventions of the Wallonian forefathers?). It's flavor is a bit much, but I hope to be able to drink this on-tap in Tuscaloosa, AL this summer, sitting out on some bar's patio, enjoying the sunset.

L: Very clear straw color with a frothy white head
S: Apple, crackers, hints of citrus & spice
T: Light and fruity taste. Sweet fruit and white bread/crackers is balanced by a green apple tartness (with hints of lemon) Slightly bitter finish with lemon and herbal notes.
F: Light to medium-light body, crisp carbonation, slightly creamy, astringent, and warm.

It is eminently drinkable. Not as robust as others I have had in the style, but its lightness does not feel lacking.

Im sampling a cold 12 oz can poured into a snifter. Ive had this beer in my fridge for several months and finally getting to it.
The beer pours a bright clear crystal gold color with a bleached white fizzy head of 1 cm. this foam sticks around as a sturdy surface layer and leaves dense lattice when I swirl. the glass has several active streams of carbonation rising to the surface.
the aroma is a little bit of husky grain, some musty blanket, a bit of lemon and some herbal tea. I also get a little black pepper in the back.
First sip reveals a light body with minimal carbonation and a slight watery feel. The beer physical traits are a a little thin for me, but not terrible.
Flavor is some sweet malt with a bit of bready note some husky grain, again lemon and a good hit of spicy yeast. I also get the black pepper on the finish, and attribute this to yeast not booze, which sometimes comes off as peppery for me. Finish is very dry on the palate.
No real hop note anywhere and this beer drinks very easy.
Not a bad saison, glad to have tried this one.

12oz can at share. Clear golden pour, spotty head. Light yeasty aroma. Taste is bready with more yeasty flavors and light savory notes. Mildly sweet and dry.

poured from a 12 oz can almost no head, a very abrupt aroma of fruit, cherry fig and grape. the taste follows the nose with a dull peppery flavor as the beer warms the taste tends to very with some spice and an increase in alcohol presencethis beer lacked demention and had too much of a wine taste. as saisans go this is no match for lunatic or tank seven.
