For our 3rd Crew Brew, Tina, chose the English beer style Extra Special Bitter. Her version features Simpsons Finest Pale Ale Marris Otter and Crystal Malts from the UK which create a beautiful mahogany color and it imparts a rich malt character of toasted biscuit, caramel, and toffee. English varietal Fuggle and Golding hops create a magnificent interplay with the malts. Perceived hop aroma is limited with earthy and light stone fruit notes. A perfectly balanced beer that is quite sessionable makes Elbow Power ESB a worthy addition to the Steel Toe lineup!

At the tap room, served in a nonic, looks great: slightly cloudy orange-amber-ruby with a half finger head that subsides quickly. Nose is very delicate and just a little biscuity malt and some faint fruity and floral hops. Taste has a lot more going on: for one thing, what I thought might be citrus doesn’t come through (which is fine by me), but instead shows up as something in between strawberries and cherries, plus there’s some tea-like tannin that lingers…it is interesting and in the direction, in terms of delicate complexity, of some of the English esbs I’ve enjoyed over the years. I do wish there was a little more malt coming through in the taste. The body is pretty thin and light, but the flavor is substantial…it also is pretty lively, comes to a nice point on the finish, and the tea-like taste lingers and kind of coats the tongue.
