Each autumn's hop harvest presents an opportunity to assess yearly variation in flavors. Some are broad across all the plants in a region, others are specific to unique clones and certain farms. Each fall we choose two different varieties to add to our Harvest Ale. The first we receive straight off the bines and add it wet in the whirlpool. The second we add whole cone as a dry hop. Our base is a simple pale with a touch of rye spiciness to be seasonally appropriate with enough heft to support the selected hops while otherwise existing to flaunt the year's crop's nuances. Harvest 2016 was wet hopped with Ekuanot from B.T. Loftus Ranches and dry hopped with El Dorado from Champoux Farms. Drink Harvest because it is a fresh taste of things to come.

On tap in Lavalette, first week of December, 2016.
Light yellow color with a 1F white cap and lots of lacing.
Malt, rye, and peppery spice. Fall-like earthiness.
Rye is a sturdy malt and it bases this brew nicely. The hops are subtle, spice and light fruits.
Fair drinking medium body. Hoppy, yet not a citrus or bitter bomb. Clean.
Rye and hops blend well here under Carton's guidance.

I had this on draught at the brewery. It pours a clear, golden-straw color with a bright white head and lacing. It smells of rye, spice, and floral hops. The taste features a malt base with a distinct flavor of rye, spices, and dry, bitter hops. This ale is light and crisp, moderately carbonated, and easy to drink with its manageable 6.2% ABV. Rye Beer is not a favorite style of mine but Harvest 2016 is flavorful and pleasant to drink.
