Every now and then we like to leave our nimble little work horse at the dock and go out for a luxury cruise on a bigger Boat. For SS Hief we explore what technology has to offer in the form of a modernized hop engine. We shored Boat’s stony, linear, crisp, dry frame with some extra wheat, doubled the size of everything, and moved the entire second dry-hopping to up-to-the-minute powder versions of Boat’s hops. Drink SS Hief and let’s see how the new money set cruises.

Rarely does a beer set out to be exactly what it was billed to be.
One of New Jersey's most famous craft beers is Carton's Boat. That's a Session IPA. This beer is twice everything in Boat. And it's an absolute beauty in my Firestone Walker Leo vs. Ursus glass. It's like sunrise on a summer day. This thing is as bright a yellow orange as can be.
This is a winner from Carton

Tried this at Eli Cannon's in Middletown, CT. Came in a tulip glass with about a half inch of head leaving behind a solid line of lacing. The appearance was hazy and golden. The aroma was grapefruit and resin forward. The taste is citrus peel and grapefruit forward. Good beer.

Pours a 4 on the SRM color chart, much foamy/creamy head with noticeable lacing- Smells like pineapple, lemon zest, guava, fresh baked dough-Taste is an initial wash of intense citrus quickly enveloped in a caramel malt back bone. I can taste the dry hopping-Feels well crafted and has much bubbles and finishes perfectly, light body which is amazing as this is a big beer. Overall Carton slams a delicious home run to his fans-

one of the better beers i've had in a while
definitely from the Boat family, it is very much an imperial version of Boat beer. Boat is great but this really hits the spot for a big tasty beer

Pours an amber-yellow color with a big, froth head.
Smells of coppery orange pulp, lime zest and a note of lemon grass and papaya. The papaya adds a great exotic fruit juiciness with just a hint of toffee underneath.
Has a wonderful silk, smooth, fuller mouthfeel with no hints of alcohol whatsoever.
Tastes of blueberries, ice bonbon, lemon zest and melting caramel. Papaya and passion fruit add in marvelously well, taming the sweetness with a subtle dryness and enriching it by a juicy note. Finishes with water melon, a little resin and honey among strawberries.
Wow, this is incredibly versatile and well put together. The 8.4 abv aren't remotely recognizable and the sweetness blends perfectly into the complex, dry peaked fruitiness. Mouthfeel on this is mighty fine as well, this is an awesomly tasty beer.

Big boat at 8.4% ABV and double the ingredients. (and only 150% the price). Happy to be 3rd reviewer.
a) Completely hazed, fogged out, bright golden, body with a dense, white, sea foam head that retains and laces my large snifter. Looks big.
s)Dominant bright, sunny, citric hops: grass, hemp, coils of sun-baked rope on deck, grapefruit, on top of wheat malt and large yeast. ...a bigger Boat, reef, and a bigger bakery.
t) Follows smell with more and bigger still vibe, grassy, hempy, citric ascension, above a solid mount of wheat malt, and a juicy, but bitter finish.
F: More body, medium carbonation, crisp and refreshing. Supreme pirate, pot-like rendition.

16 oz. can purchased at brewery 9/2/17. No date on can, but a funny message.
L: Basically the same as Boat, a nice mostly-clear golden. 2F head, good retention, with some lacing and a cap and ring.
S: Lots of grapefruit, some wheat malt and yeast. Like they say, a bigger Boat.
T: Grapefruit, a solid backbone of wheat malt, and a very slightly bitter finish. Good stuff.
F: Light side of medium body, medium carbonation, great construction and balance. Quite crisp and refreshing despite higher ABV.
O: Can't believe they didn't do this ages ago. What a great idea. I would drink this all the time.

Poured into Carton teku glass. It pours a nearly opaque, apricot-orange color with a fluffy, bright white head and elegant lacing with retention through the pour. The nose is surprisingly subdued: some faint citrus and wheat. The taste is a really pleasant combination of dry cracker and light citrus. It also has an earthiness vaguely reminiscent of Trupfel and Shinshu. It finishes with a touch of fruity sweetness. This ale is light, crisp, and refreshing, with pleasant carbonation. The 8.4% ABV is noticeable. This is an adventuresome beer typical of Carton. It has the lightness of a Pale but the ABV exceeds the O'Dubs. Overall, it's a great beer. New Jersey's best weather is late summer and early fall. Drink this on the deck at the Shore on a beautiful day with good friends.
