Bourbon Barrel SWISHRBourbon Barrel SWISHR
Notes: Smoked malt is one of the more dubious tools in a brewer’s bag because thresholds are vastly different. What to one palate is a hint of bacon or a whiff of BBQ to another is ashtray or Band-Aids. How can Carton ignore playing this game? Where can smoldering aromatics go off the beaten craft? In bourbon barrel SWISHR we have reassembled the deconstructed aspects of flavored blunt. Rich dark malts brought smoky by the addition of oak smoked pale wheat, conditioned in bourbon valleys and a heavy plug of hops that smell like their cousins. Drink bourbon barrel SWISHR and hand me down a 50-pack.

The beer pours a translucent, dark brown from the can. Some color in the glass, but opaque. The rocky, two finger, densely-packed, brown foam forks in my teku. It settles a bit, leaving a ton of lacing on the glass. No visible carbonation.

Sweetness up front with milk chocolate and vanilla. Moderate level of dank, grassy, weedy and herbal hops. A hint of oregano. It all comes together to from a berry/dark fruit aroma too. Like a chocolate covered raspberry jelly or chocolate cherry cordial. Some woody, nutty and vegetal notes as well.

Up front some gentle sweet malt notes including chocolate. But the beer quickly shifts dry with leather and tobacco. The hops are bitter and herbal. As mentioned in the video for the beer, a Cascadian Dark Ale. Dank hops. The beer smells sweeter than it tastes.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Dry on the finish.

Overall, a very enjoyable iteration in the Swishr line up. The bourbon barrel is very soft. Wild love to try the base side by side for comparison. The flavored ones are a bit more fun, but this one is also very enjoyable, while staying true to the objective at hand.

Canned on 4/18/2019. Poured into a Carton pint glass. It pours a nice mahogany color with cola hues, and a finger of fluffy, light khaki-colored head and a thick sheen of lacing. It's a very attractive pour. On the nose there is roasted malt, char, tobacco ash, and a faint whiff of cherry and caramel. I expected more of a bourbon smell and it did emerge slowly through the pour. It's far more burnt and bitter than the original variant. The char and cigar ash are front and center but as the glass warms I can begin to taste the bourbon; it's delicate and not distracting. Although I smelled some subtle cherry there is none in the flavor. It's just a straight-forward bitter brew. This ale has a creamy - almost chewy - mouth feel with a pleasant level of carbonation, and the moderate 6% ABV allows for easy drinking. Overall, this is the type of beer that I wouldn't want to drink regularly but really enjoy as a change of pace. It's a typical adventuresome offering from Carton. It would pair well with a burger with caramelized onions or barbequed ribs with a sweet sauce.

4-25-19 Enjoyed my first and write the 1st review of SWISHR Bourbon Barrel. I love Rauchbier done well, or well done.
Tastes MUCH MUCH bigger than a 6% ABV beer.
A: Like all Carton's beers, sharp fresh carbonation, lacing, sticky head, this a a super smoky, hazed smoke beer black-brown.
S: Smoke. Hard to know how they make the smokiness pleasant, but they do. Followed by bourbon, roasty porter grain, sweet malt and balancing hop (grassy, herbal) bitterness.
T: Follows the smell, would be great with rich foods, indian/asian spicey. Or sweet and sour, or tomato sauce / mexican.
F:As with the best craft, there's a weight, a body, and a long finish that showcases the art.
