Our newest addition to our Whip lineup, is a 5% German Style Black Lager! Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate open you up to a world of richness. A clean and crisp first sip sets the stage for layers of toasty malt, chocolate and hint of caramel sweetness to follow. Notes of toffee and caramel create a balanced sweetness. A smooth and creamy mouthfeel leaves lingering cola notes. Reitgerte captures the nature of a traditional Schwarzbier and is the perfect beer to enjoy during these cold weather days.

(shaker pint pour at Blue Monkey last night)
In the lighting, black but probably ultra dark brown; bit of foam when served, it all but disappeared... touch caramelly roasted grain on the nose, not much depth due to the serving temp... the caramel touch expressed much more than expected on the palate; the overall malt character was rather smooth around the edges, indicating lagering; mellow roasty cookie aftertaste... its medium body had some rich roundness to it, almost oily in the finish... not a bad drop, but likely not at its peak in this type of serving; similar to a dry stout, but probably wouldn't be mistaken for one; curious to compare my experience here to the canned version (2508)

It was a cold winter night and I was looking at a chilled case full of IPA 4-packs. Then my eyes were drawn to the orange and black can art. What a great decision! Reitgerte is a deep roasty schwarzbier perfect to accompany a hearty winter meal. The pour is jet black with a really unusual gray-tan head--visually stunning actually. The flavor is straightforward, consistent through the glass and robust--roast, chocolate, toffee--a touch of espresso. Drink up while you warm up.

Black Lager, "Riding Crop", you betcha, black leather, horse hide, hay decay, smokey barn.
Not a smoke lager, but definitely a black lager with smokey tones.
Best new beer from Carton in 2024.
