I enjoyed the Sweetwater 420 experience. Can begin to feel a bit heavy after a few.

Kicking off their seventeenth year, Sweetwater Brewery commemorates the occasion with a strong Belgain-style farmhouse ale that captures all the fruity, spicy and winy goodness of those classic saisons; except with a simplified "American" character.
Golden in color, yet laced with a mild and yeasty haze that keeps it from a bright glow. But this is classic as steadily streaming carbonation can be seen caldering from the beer's depths to construct a creamy cottony-white head. Holding on for most of the session, the foam eventually succumbs to the beer's weight and power while speckling the glass with dotted lace.
Juicy malt aromas are bready, honey-like and seemingly sweetened with simple syrup. Fruity and spicy scents alternate on the nose with apple, clove, lemon, white pepper, melon, fennel, orange and cumin. Lacking the drier or earthy tones of authentic saison, this variety has a muted but floral tone.
The spicy ale layers upon the tongue with sweetness- thin caramel, light bread, honey and powdered sugar ensures a deeper malt presence than is expected; weaving in those orchard and citrus fruit flavors, then balancing with pepper spice, grassy hops and its perfumy whimsy that gives a fleeting glimpse of soap near its finish. A mild taste of white wine acidity and stemmy bitterness gives a closing crispness.
Fuller than usual, that hearty malt character and long gripping sweetness keeps the beer creamy instead of expressive with any champagne-like presence. Its balanced finish prevents a peppery dryness from the command that's desired. A malty-dry finish carries some extra weight into finish, but complements its alcohol warmth quite well.
Sweetwater's birthday beer exhibits all the hallmark flavors that are common in saison, but the balance is tilted to the sweeter malt and fruit side rather than the drier and spicier presence. And those muted earthen characteristics limit its impact on the palate.
