Sideways Rain, our latest Smog Days IPA, is a 6.3% West Coast IPA brewed in collaboration with one of the best hops purveyors around, Yakima Chief Hops! They gave us access to a super cool, super-cutting edge new hop blend called Cryo Pop™ for this version of Smog Days. Cryo Pop™ hop blend contains hop varieties that are loaded with beer-soluble compounds that survive harsh brewing processes including heat, fermentation, and CO2 scrubbing. By maximizing concentrations of the most impactful and complimentary hop compounds, this amazing blend offers an incredibly powerful hop that creates a true ‘pop’ of aromas in beers. This blend delivers massive tropical, stone fruit, and citrus aromas. We've also got some Ahtanum & Ekuanot hops in there for an added flavor punch. Sideways Rain is a bright and drinkable IPA that brings refreshing flavors of juicy fruit gum, gooseberry, and touches of geranium all atop a cracker malt profile. This is a super fun beer that is not to be missed!

Sideways Rain is the latest release in the Smog Days IPA Series, a collection of experimental IPAs alternating between West Coast and hazy IPAs.

Sideways Rain, Upside down Lava, Inverted Tornado… call this thing whatever, because it’s a banger. Hell, it’s not even summer anymore but this one goes boom like the 4th of July. Juicy hops caress me with a smoothness that I haven’t seen since John Gilbert walked into the room.

Canned 9/24/21. Consumed on 10/10/21 after being bought as a single can off a room temp shelf about 5 days earlier. Ina stemmed tulip glass it pours a clear (no haze, other than maybe a slight chill haze that is temporary) dark straw yellow with relatively voluminous but loose white to off-white head that recedes in a few minutes to nothing more than a thin ring with a barely-there island of small bubbles in the middle of the glass. Leaves essentially no lacing.
Smell and flavor are similar and really hard to describe other than to say the Ekuanot hops come through and it is a "different" flavor profile from the ubiquitous tropical fruit/citrus offerings in the IPA world. Maybe some citrus peel coming through in the flavor. I found this on their website: "This blend delivers massive tropical, stone fruit, and citrus aromas. We've also got some Ahtanum & Ekuanot hops in there for an added flavor punch. Sideways Rain is a bright and drinkable IPA that brings refreshing flavors of juicy fruit gum, gooseberry, and touches of geranium all atop a cracker malt profile."
OK, I got little or no citrus (maybe some peel) and no tropical fruit, but that odd flavor I picked up could be that geranium that they reference. I gotta admit this is the first time that geranium was in a beer profile for me.
Medium to sort of light-ish body with fine, mild carbonation in the mouth. The bitterness is definitely there and it lingers but it is not intense....just enough to let you know it is there.
