750ML corked & caged bottle. I haven’t bought this brewery’s overpriced bombers to date, but it’s a wheat wine. So I made an exception. Reluctantly. Split with my wife.
The cage breaks off in my hand, & the cork comes out without a whisper of carbonation. Surprisingly, the light gold liquid comes out looking fairly lively. Smells fruity & grainy, without being specific.
Black Currant Imperial Wheat Wine is pretty non-descript. Unfocused fruitiness – black currant would have been my eleventh guess – mixed with a low-key wheatiness & soft grains. The Belgian yeast plays oddly off of this background, & a drop kick of booziness adds to the confusion. Mouthfeel is nice, & I’ll drink half of the bomber because I’ll barely notice it going down.
Tastes odd, like the flavors were forced to mix against their will, kind of like those unnatural Snickers Bars (shudders). OK, I suppose, & confirms my decision not to run out & buy more Boom Island bombers.

L: hazy amber under a 1" ecru blanket of foam with fair to moderate retention
S: big black currant aromas supported by wet leather, some light grains, wheat, alcohol, a hint of honey and mild Belgian yeast character
T: Black currant is the big deal in the flavor but a faint phenolic smoke flavor, Belgian yeast and moderate wheat flavors give it complexity. The beer starts mildly sweet but a moderate hop bitterness and some tannins tone things down by the finish and provide depth
F: delightfully creamy and almost mousse-like with very soft carbonation. The body is medium
O: rich, elegant, delightful beer encourages sipping slowly to contemplate the interaction between the black currant, the tannins, the hop bitterness and the malty sweetness
