Poured into a Fat Head's nonic pint

P good looking brilliant hazy orange color w/ a small white head
N soft nose of light graham cracker and cinnamon; pleasant
T tasty peach, graham cracker and cinnamon come together in the profile; smoothed out by sweet lactose; just a touch of tartness; cohesive
Mf med to med-full bodied; soft-med carb
O a sweet, satisfying, and nicely done brew- I dig it! good 1st impression of Shades

L: Pours a cloudy orange color with a small white head and no lacing on the glass.

S: Fresh fuzzy peaches, a hint of rubber glove, notes of pie crust and vanilla.

T: Fuzzy peaches, graham cracker crust, vanilla and light tartness.

F: A touch watery, lower carbonation.

O: This is a nice sour, the peaches just give me a slight rubber glove note.

This was another beer that I picked up in Downtown Salt Lake City when I was out that way not too long ago. Never had anything from Shades before but it was easy to see why this was a World Beer Cup and International Beer Cup award winner as it was immensely enjoyable and would have been the perfect nightcap - had it been the last brew that I was reviewing tonight!

What an amazing pour to this as it was picture-perfect in my stemmed and bulbous glass. Muted, golden, and topped off with a head that looked too good to be true, this seemed like something whipped in a machine from a diner in these parts. The foam settled slowly and I would have given this a 5 for looks had there been more lacing left behind. Only a thin and wavy ring remained near the center of my glass with scattered dots the rest of the way down. Loads of peach, pie crust, tangerine cream, and a hint of cinnamon were in the nose as the taste equally followed suit. Some sour patch kids, gumdrops, and crystalline sugar came through in the taste as amazingly, they didn't overpower the other flavors. Everything complemented each other nicely as this certainly didn't last long in my glass!

Strong for a Berliner Weisse, the alcohol was felt at the end but never detected during any of my (brief) time imbibing this winner of a brew. Couldn't find a date on the can as there was just a bit of dark sediment that settled at the bottom of the liquid, as I had to swirl it out. Regardless, this was such a winner in my eyes and if you love this style, you owe it to yourself to obtain this beer, as I absolutely enjoyed this from start to finish!

Poured from 12oz can into my BeerAdvocate teku. Hard to read the stamp exactly but I believe it says "born on 5/22, freshest by 10/22". This beer is an "ale brewed with peach, cinnamon, vanilla, graham cracker & lactose", a similar formula to their Key Lime beer in the series.

Appearance: extremely murky medium-yellow hue with a finger of frothy ivory foam atop. This is a look I might indeed associate with a lactose beer. The color is nice, but the head doesn't stick around too long.

Smell: vanilla, graham cracker, peach, cinnamon; it's absolutely what it says on the tin. It doesn't smell very beer-like, but I definitely give it credit for ethics in advertising.

Taste: sweet with a bready base that I can only read as graham cracker now. The flavors are subtly different than the aroma, with the peach and cinnamon taking more of the fore, and with a hint of sourness. I mean; as a *beer* it is not very traditional, but like I said, it's what it says on the tin.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I like this beer. It's a very sweet dessert treat, but I'm glad to have tried it.

Peach Cobbler
Shades Brewing
Date: 21 July 2021
The last beer I tried from Shades was an interesting combo that did not mix with my palette. I have consumed this beer a few times, and it is not too bad. The beer is 44 degrees, and I used a tulip glass. A frothy and airy three-fingered light tan head was created. The somewhat slow dissipated left a no lacing on the glass. The color is akin to pureed peaches. No clarity exists when put up to a light source. I was wanted to see something on the glass during the dissipation.

The aroma is peaches, cinnamon, fruity sweetness, a lemon-like tartness, graham crackers, toasted crackers, and a touch of floral.
I taste peaches, biscuits, toasted cereal, cinnamon, a slight hint of milk, lemon tartness, and vanilla.

The mouthfeel is puckering.

The body is light, medium carbonation, and lasting finish.

The beer does taste like a peach cobbler. However, I wanted more of the biscuit/breadiness that comes with a cobbler. A refreshing beer and a lot better than the last one I drunk from Shades.

12oz can poured into a tulip; head disappears instantly, body is an attractive murky gold color, almost completely opaque; sour peaches; vanilla; graham cracker; cinnamon; stone fruit; brown sugar; sweet and tart complementarily, with a creamy body that reminds you that lactose was used in this brew. Solid all the way around, these Shade's sours are well-executed.

another extremely tasty flavored ale in this sour series they do. great to have cans in the boise market of their stuff now. this one though, as good and delicious as it is, is really raw and unrefined, about half the can is this gloopy light brown sediment, almost looks like graham cracker flour or something, but its chunky to the point of not being drinkable, and its not just a little at the bottom, its a lot, and its a real turn off. the beer thats liquid that we do get out of the can is flat with no head at all, still quite sedimented, and this murkey rusty orange color, really unappealing presentation overall in the glass. the beer though has got killer flavor, im almost shocked how much i like it since i almost dumped this out just from looking at it. the peach is natural, there is cinnamon and vanilla in it that make it seem desserty, there is a real pie crust element as well, and enough tartness that it doesnt seem overly sweet, if there is lactose in here, its not overdone. the peach is real and ripe, and it really does taste like cobbler, so weird in a sour, but that part is clean and modest, and it works. obviously i want this cleaned up a whole lot, none of the others in the series have been like this, so maybe we got a bum can, and i hate that its totally flat, but i love the flavors and cant help but still be kind of impressed by this, even if its barely passable in this form. needs work, but i have been loving this series from shades lately!

edit: another can left in the beer fridge for what i thought would be way too long, more than a few months anyway, and like the boysenberry one, the solids seem to have dropped out and stayed in the can, this is still hazy but not sloppy anymore, the feel is lighter too as a result, and even though there was some fruit fade here, i think it was a better beer the second time around. improving look and feel scores, maybe these need some time in the fridge to refine themselves...
