Notes: Shipshape is a Czech-style lager featuring a classic yeast strain, Bohemian pilsner malt, and copious amounts of zesty hand-selected Saaz hops. A carefully constructed beverage, Shipshape undergoes a complex mash program prior to heading to the cellar for lengthy conditioning in horizontal stainless. Patience and a studied construct result in a crisp beer that tastes of potent noble hop character, biscuity malts, light dough, and mild mineral water atop a light body. Enjoy it cold in the heat of the day!

Clean medium gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of sweet malt, light bread crust and floral hops with a mineral edge.

Taste is upfront malt with a distinct mineral backbone. Hops are still floral but with an assertiveness that both balances and complements the malt. Not a lot of different flavors but good flavors and the overall effect is low key yet striking.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonationl

There is an overall balance and complexity that compares favorably with the original European ancestors.

Not the biggest Pilsner guy out there, but this one was a knock out. Light, crisp with a touch of sweetness. Almost reminded me of a bready Kolsch. Best Pilsner I've ever had.

From a 16oz can, dated 05/13/21. ‘Czech out my melody.’ As usual, I’ve no idea what that means. Served in a willi becher pub glass,

Pours a clear, super-pale straw-yellow with a couple fingers of pouffy foam. Retention is good, leaving a sudsy cap and gobs of bubbly lacing. A cold haze develops and there is a multitude of fine, streaming bubbles. But how odd to be holding a mostly clear Tree House beer.

The nose is faint but there is baking soda biscuit and a whiff of apple juice.

Taste is clean and at first seemingly dry upfront, similar to the nose with hard-tack biscuit and baking soda minerality, earthy apple skin anda wheaty, white pepper sweet-and-spicy note, then a sweeter, doughy, white grape flavour appearing and gradually building in intensity on the back end.

Feel is initially crisp and clean but with a slick, pectin-like mouth coating character accumulating as it drinks down. Medium bodied with fine, bright carbonation. There’s a very slight mashy, boozy warmth in the gullet which seems oddly incompatible with the stated 4.8% abv.

Overall, a better than decent pils and fairly convincing relative to the style. I mean, I wouldn’t throw out the NEDIPA portfolio in its favor but, hey, when a lager is called for, this’ll surely get the job done.

Canned 2021/05/13
Pours a med large pillowy frothy head with good retention, fair messy lacing, mostly clear golden tan color

Nose is very nice, grainy sweet pilsner malt, complex doughy cereal malt, possibly even decoction, soft lager and soft malt, noble floral herbal hops

Taste big grainy sweet pilsner malt, doughy cereal, soft malt, layered decoction mash malt complexity, nice noble hops with floral herbal flavors and a med lighter bitterness, dry soft finish, med spicy hop bitterness

Mouth is med bod, soft, med frothy carb

Overall great pilsner, I feel like more German pilsner up front with malt and hop characters, but softness especially finish of a Czech pils, although not quite the bitterness of a Czech, but very nicely done

16 oz can into a pilsener glass.

Pours a cloudy golden straw color with a massive 3 finger white head. Solid retention. Leaves some nice cobweb lacing around the top of the glass.

Aromas of sweet cereal grain and doughy malts with some grassiness and subtle hops.

The flavor follows the nose with cereal grains and sweet dough, grass, hay, and light, spicy hops.

The feel is light bodied with good carbonation. Very crisp and highly drinkable.

Overall, a good Czech pils. That's really all there is to be said. Would definitely love to try this on draft.

Picked-up a four-pack of cans at Tree House in Sandwich for about thirteen dollars. My one hundred and fifty third brew from these guys. This is very well done.
