One is a throwback. It's the first in a series of beers where we reference old hand-written batch notes from our nascent days of existence. Here we have Julius scaled directly from batch notes on May 29th, 2012, in what would be the first commercial batch of Julius. It's hard to say if this will be a pure throwback, since our choreographed dance of brewing, which is so important to the outcome of a beer, has evolved over time. At any rate, this should be a fun one to try!

A - Pours a cloudy orange with a two finger creamy white head. Tons of sticky lacing.

S - Aroma is pineapple, mango, orange and piney hops.

T - The taste is orange, pineapple, peach, grapefruit and a bitter piney hop finish.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a crisp finish.

O - Solid. Nice mixture of east coast and west coast IPAs.

Canned 6/15/22. “Uno“ stamped on the bottom of the can

Working right along, we have another intriguing one. This is basically an attempt to recreate the first commercial batch of Julius back in 2012. I never had it then as I was much too young so I won’t be able to speak to the comparison, but I am interested to see what this is like. Let’s get into it

Pours a hazy dark gold with 3 fingers of creamy off white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing

This is quite similar to Julius in the nose, with perhaps a bit more zest and a more defined hoppiness. I’m picking up on aromas of orange zest, creamy peach, earthy hops, bready malt, white pepper, and light pineapple juice

I’d have to pretty much say the same in taste, but this straddling the line of NEIPA/WCIPA, it feels a bit undefined. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting crackery malt, orange juice, tangerine, peppery hops, mango juice, and light pine. The swallow brings notes of orange juice, fresh pine, creamy peach, earthy hops, pineapple juice, bready malt, and grapefruit rind. It starts to take shape more as I drink it

A light medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a sharp and zesty beer. Finishes mostly dry but a tad juicy

This one is really interesting to me. Not exactly what I was expecting, but it's interesting to think that in a beer world where NEIPAs didn't get progressively more juicy, this might be what people consider the cream of the crop

Notes are a combination of an incomplete review ~5 weeks ago and today. Not the best method I know

Poured from a can (08Jul2021) into a sorta pint glass (today’s can into a TH teku)

L: pours a completely opaque, darker orange with a moderate white head that fades to a good layer of foam. Nice chunky lacing left with each sip

S: huge fruit nose right as I crack the can, and as I pour. Peach, orange, mango, slight pine, a little earthy. Fruit character a bit more restrained in this second can, but it’s all there when I stick my nose in the glass. Malt comes thorough more as well

T: really enjoying the flavor here. Get a great wave of mango and orange at first, with that earthier/piney note from the nose coming through nicely. Freshly squeezed, a bit acidic juice type flavor. Medium-long finish, slightly sweet. In the second can would say the earthy/piney notes and fruit character are basically neck and neck, with that piney bitterness carrying through the middle and finish

F: medium+ carbonation, medium body. Slightly drying, fairly smooth without being overly full/pillowy/creamy/etc.

O: a fun idea, and a very solid IPA. The bitterness is a nice departure from the usual IBU-free soft juice, overall a very good beer

Pours a fairly deep golden color, big foamy head. Great lacing. Really nice lemony citrus aroma With a touch of dankness. Flavor is citrus: I get lemon pith, light grassy dankness on the finish. Appropriate carbonation. Overall a nice ipa.
