Kaffee Bergsteiger is our Schwarzbier conditioned atop our House-roasted Autumn blend of coffee, Walden. Pouring a clean chocolatey color into the glass, it carries notes of fresh coffee, bread crust, nuttiness, and mild caramel sweetness balanced by familiar and ever-present chocolate and caramel-forward coffee flavor.

16oz can poured into a thin tulip.
A: Dark mahogany brown, clarity seems great although it is opaque due to the color. Two fingers of tight-bubbled and creamy head are light brown in color and very well retaining. Thin rings of lacing.
S: Plenty of nutty medium-roast coffee up front with a kiss of smoke. Malty underpinnings of brown molasses, treacle, light runny caramel, chocolate truffles, and brown sugar. Perhaps a hint of herbal hops.
T: Follows the nose. Lots of coffee up front. Medium roast, nutty, and with some light smokiness. It brings a firm and even acidity with it, too. After the initial shock of coffee subsides, the base lager comes through. Brown molasses, treacle, brown bread, toasty grain, and burnt sugar. Grassy and spicy/herbal hops. Dry finish sees more roasty/smokey coffee flavor lingering.
M: Medium bodied. Round and firm malt texture. A bit chewy. Some enamel gripping astringency. Carbonation scrubs with a firm seltzery aggression, lifts away all heavy texture, and makes it seem as if it disappears from the palate.
O: Fairly coffee dominant and maybe a bit overly aggressive in how it is carbonated. Hedonistic and good enough to scratch the coffee beer itch when you get it, but maybe not the most memorable brew. Solid enough that I'd gladly drink through a 4pk, but maybe not so outstanding that I'd make it a point to buy it again.
