Aesthetics begin with shell and bone. After this, light and its duplications against the walls, its pitch the same as soot in the morning light. Revolting against our transience, awe stricken, the pleasures of the world are marked upon the surface. Our own hands no different than the fire corralled in stone circles.
La Grotte is a Pilsner using 100% imported French ingredients. Johanne de Arch Pilsen malt produces a pale, straw color with a striking clarity. Notes of biscuit and light airy bread set the stage for a trio of French grown hop varieties. Classic Strisselspalt and its daughter variety Aramis combine to express soft noble spice and aromas of fresh hay. Finally Mistral hops, as if carried on a breeze, present shy notes of honey, lemon peel and clementine.

16 oz can
Pours a clear golden straw color with a 2-finger white head. Retention is solid; foam settles into a thick blanket. Leaves some sticky lacing.
Aroma has notes of smoked malt, damp hay, fresh biscuits, citrus and noble hop spice.
Taste is clean and citrusy, with notes of sweet dough, grass, orange marmalade, and spicy hops. Very floral.
Light bodied with lively carbonation. A bit watery.
Overall this is a very good pale lager. I don't know much about French Pilsners but as far as European lagers go this one is quite good. Refreshing and highly drinkable.

On tap at Tree House Brewing in Saratoga, NY.
This one pours a clear golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like orange peel, Earl Grey tea, hay, and freshly cut grass.
I don’t really know what a French pilsner is, but I enjoy this one, whatever it is. There’s a nice biscuity and crackery malt backbone here, with some really pleasant tea-like and grassy bitterness. The lightly orange-y hop character blends with the floral and grassy bitterness to give it a distinct Bergamot/Earl Grey tea vibe that I really enjoy.
This is very light bodied, but very drinkable, with a smooth and crisp finish.
There’s a lot to love with this one, it’s a really intriguing pilsner with some interesting ingredient choices.
