Rye Saison

The archetypical saison will let the yeast talk over the malt and hops. We just thought that Rye might have something to add to the conversation. Listening closely it seems to say: “I belong here” and we agree.

Tasted from a bomber bottle bought in Ogden, UT.

L - Golden-orange in color and hazy but still bright. Nice, cream-colored head that is thick and fluffy initially but evaporates to nothing in a few minutes. After that there is no sign of it outside of a tiny bit of lacing and a ring of a few individual bubbles around the edge of the glass.

S - Aroma is unique. There is a hint of bread from the malt, but the overwhelming aroma is a sweet mix of sugar and an herbal note that probably comes from the rye. The sweet/herbal mix is like nothing I've smelled before; not offensive, but also not inviting because it is too different. Some cotton candy-like Belgian yeast notes.

T - The flavors follow the aromas. There is a sharp, herbal/spicy note up front along with a background of a dessert sweetbread. The overall impression is similar to gingerbread, but the spice is not ginger. Hops do not come through, although it's possible they are contributing to the spiciness and herbal flavors.

F - Medium body. Low, slightly prickly carbonation. Low hops bitterness. Low to moderate alcohol burn.

O - Interesting and enjoyable aromas and flavors that have a unique herbal twist due to the rye. However, the low carbonation and restrained yeast notes detract from this beer when judged as a saison.

this beer is awesome, and although i havent had much from these guys, i have been very impressed by the ones i have had. a rye saison, but with some interesting flavors to it, almost hefeweizen-like in the yeast complexion, but with a strong rye flavor and a rustic charm that really gets me. an affordable bottle too which is cool. hazy pale yellow beer with a quickly receding head and some visible carbonation but not quite as active as i like the style to be. banana and spice complex in the nose from the yeast, fermented warmer, but nicely grainy too, with the rye being fairly substantial in this. subtle peppery, but very bright even with all the malt. there is a crispness to it despite all the fruitiness, finishes dry and clean, but the rye flavor is bold too, and while this is somewhat of a weird beer in terms of style, its really tasty and well made. the carbonation is there, and the body is fuller but not heavy. delicious stuff, old world sort of beer, different but familiar too, just really good beer. these guys are on it!

Bottle from Bier:Thirty. First impression is straight up Saison, then its ’what’s that other taste?". That’s where the rye comes in, adding a bit of the musty, sour rye bread notes. Body seems a bit thin, head is very airy, weak, little lacing to speak of. Rye lingers a bit on the palate, a tad bitter, but a nice turn for a combo I’ve never had before (rye/Saison)

Served On-Tap

A — Pours a nice bright coppery color into the glass, there is fairly nice clarity, and lacing left behind is consistent and nice.

S — Smells of some spicy rye, little bit of pepper, some toasted caramel, some nice and bright yeasty saison character here as well, of course.

T — Tastes of a big rye punch right off the bat, nice and spicy, there is a fantastic balance from the yeast and remaining malt bill, little bit of a hoppy balance here as well.

M — Medium bodied, with a long lasting finish, nice.

O — Great overall, a spicy saison, yes please!

Rich amber color in the Kasteel chalice. Foam is only a memory after a minute. Light bodied but the sharpness lingers after the carbonation disappears.

Flavor is weirdly perfumey. Is that the rye? This is a new flavor for me. Sourish yet sweet tinged. Dry finish but malty. Green mango, spoiled apricots. Totally strange. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep amber color with a tiny bit of haze and a two finger head of fizzy white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a nice level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer huge of a funky smell with tons of grassy and yeasty smells as well as with a big showing of acetic acid/vinegar. Along with these flavors comes some aromas of lemon and some other lighter fruit smells of orange and pear. A little bit of a rye rounds it all out, producing one very nice smelling saison overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a thick and fruity taste that has a mix of lighter fruits of orange, apple, pear, and peach. Other flavors are present from the start as well, with flavors of a light rye bread and some sour lemon and grass there as well. The yeasty tastes start out very light but develop more and more as the taste moves forward. Along with the yeast, the sour and funky flavors really increase with a big increase in the grassy, lemon, and herbal flavors. A little bit of an increase in the sweet, and a moderate increase in the rye comes at the end of the flavor profile, leaving one with a smooth and funky and very enjoyable saison flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is average in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A little bit more carbonation may have been a little bit better overall for the brew, but all in all, the moderateness was rather nice for the funk and sweet mix of the brew and made for an easy but flavorful drinker.

Overall – This is a very nicely done saison. A fantastic balance of fruit, funk, yeast, and just a little accentuating hint of spicy rye. A rather tasty brew and certainly one to try if you get a chance.

22oz bottle. Poured out an amber color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of wheat, yeast, caramel and rye bread. Nice spicy bite with a toasted caramel finish. Nice yeasty bite.
