473 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated 11/10/2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a turbid pale straw yellow colour, briefly topped with one finger of frothy, soapy white head that sizzles off within two minutes or so. A narrow curtain of wavering lace clings to the glass, hanging above a thin collar and wispy cap - my NEIPA sense is tingling. The juicy aroma only provides further support for that thesis, offering up notes of grapefruit, peach, lychee and plum, as well as hints of passion fruit and watermelon. Two thumbs up so far.
Just a tasty IPA all around: real juicy, and not very bitter. Grapefruit, cantaloupe, apricot and passion fruit, with notes of gooseberry and ripe, sweet plum by mid-sip. Finishes with grapefruit pith, floral/earthy bitterness and lingering hints of stone fruit into the aftertaste, where you can sort of make out the 7.3% - this is a strong IPA, but the alcohol is well-integrated. Medium in body, with low carbonation that gently brushes across the palate; feels smooth, soft and fulfilling in the mouth. Far more drinkable than it should be, due in combination to its low bitterness, hidden alcohol and damn deliciousness.
Final Grade: 4.37, a stunning A grade. Don't let its unassuming name fool you - An IPA with Citra & Loral is one of the most impressive new IPAs I've tried in recent memory, and possibly the best beer (of Ontario providence) included in this advent calendar... though in all fairness, there's still a few stragglers left over that could surprise me. I have tried so many hazy IPAs over the last few years that I'm honestly kind of burned out on them, but leave it to Bellwoods to raise my eyebrows once again. Fantastic stuff - I'm assuming this is of rotating availability, but if you're lucky enough to come across it, don't you dare hesitate to grab a few.
