ASWC is a series of stouts we created to feature local coffee roasters, and observe the results of different beans in beer. We keep the ABV relatively low, the body chewy and voluptuous, and let the coffee do most of the talking.
Our newest version is made with the Diaspora Blend from Nile Coffee Club.

Almost all the other coffees used in this series worked, and one could discern their differences even a few month in. Not this one, faded. A miss, I fear.

473 mL can from Maud's Variety; dated Dec 30 2021 and served barely chilled.
Pours black as night, producing an inch of soapy, big bubbled, brown-coloured head that dissipates within three or four minutes. A scant smattering of lace is scattered about behind it, with a thin, frothy collar being the only other remnant of note - looks fine to me, and that nose is just heavenly, almost like sniffing an actual cup of (really effing good) coffee. Freshly roasted beans, potting soil, dark chocolate and hints of fudge, with suggestions of smoked nuts and blueberries.
Its flavours follow after the aroma - plenty of roasted beans right off the bat, accompanied by subtler flavours of cocoa, smoked nuts, molasses and blueberry. The coffee doesn't let up on the back end, with lingering hints of bitter grounds and burnt wood fading into a roasty aftertaste; suggestions of berry linger for even longer. Medium-light in body, with very low carbonation that barely registers - a slightly fuzzy feeling on the tongue, if that. Feels very smooth, and somewhat oily and/or tongue-coating; drinkability is alright... I mean, I can drink several cups of coffee over the course of a day, but coffee beers tend to be a one-per-night deal (because y'know, I'd like to sleep at some point).
Final Grade: 4.07, an A-. Bellwoods' ASWC Nile Coffee Diaspora Blend tastes great and smells fantastic, with its only serious weak point being the mouthfeel, which is rather flat, and a teensy bit on the thin side. Of course, keep in mind it's only 5% - so while those huge coffee flavours & aromas might've led me to expect something more hefty, perhaps that was an unrealistic expectation - a mind easily tricked while being overwhelmed by high quality java goodness. I would buy this beer again in a heartbeat, and hope to try more ASWC variants in the future.
