Aged 18 months in Armagnac barrels (60%) and 15 months in rye barrels (40%).
Rich and velvety, it's the perfect culmination of roasted malts, oak aging and subtle spirit uptake.

500 mL bottle purchased from the brewery; dated Jan 31 2024 and served barely chilled. This is the first BOYD I've come across, and I'm excited to find out if this label lives up to the hype.
Pours like used engine oil; visually it's totally black, like the blackest void in outer space. Not a single photon is getting through that glass, or at least that's what my trusty spectrophotometer is telling me. A quarter inch of loose, brown-coloured suds doesn't last for long, quickly worn down to a tight, creamy collar; good lace generation as the level drops after a few sips. The aroma is boozy and multi-faceted, with notes of oak, rye whisky, caramel, brandy, dark chocolate, fig and prune, as well as suggestions of cocoa, coffee cake, vanilla, roasted grains, and a vinous quality.
The first sip quite literally mesmerized me - there's so much going on, and all of it comes together flawlessly, like the plot threads of a later-season Seinfeld episode. First, the base stout supplies background notes of dark chocolate, coffee cake, cocoa and dark fruits, with hints of brandy/armagnac (as if I can tell the difference) coming on strong by mid-sip. Mildly vinous and quite figgy, with big notes of rye and oak on the back end; hints of vanilla, caramel, mission fig and cherry cola at the finish. Boozy aftertaste of rye whisky, roasted malts, dark chocolate and dark fruits that lingers. Full-bodied, with light carbonation and a smooth, soft, slick, tongue-coating mouthfeel and some numbing from the alcohol. Pour it into a snifter and take your time, letting it warm - this brew has so much to offer, and there's no reason to rush.
Final Grade: 4.65, a rare A+. Bring Out Your Dead 2024 is unbelievably good - a swig of this'll inspire any corpse to hop off of the cart, declare that they're feeling fine and ready to go for a walk. Just for reference's sake, I've been reviewing imperial stouts and porters nearly daily for almost a month, now - and plenty of those were excellent beers in their own right, but BOYD 2024 is legitimately on a higher plane of existence. Fabulously complex, endlessly intriguing and so delicious that there's no way this could possibly be any good for you. One of the best stouts I've reviewed in years - maybe one of the top ten beers I've ever had, period - and absolutely worth seeking out for yourself.
