Slithering in from Picton, ON, comes Slake Handler: a pale ale we brewed with Slake Brewing in celebration of their 4th anniversary.
This collab brings together the best of the city and the country, and is a reminder that balance (in life and in beer) is paramount. The beer itself is dry, light and velvety and involves no scales or venom, but powerful notes of strawberry, pine, Sprite, and mint.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 26 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours hazy and turbid, its straw yellow-coloured body giving rise to less than a finger of loose, bubbly white head that vanishes within a minute or two. A thin collar of suds is the only survivor, save for a small patch of film on the surface; there's also some skimpy lace deposition over the course of the glass. The aroma is fruity and herbaceous, with hints of lemon, lime, melon and strawberry, as well as some floral, piney hops; suggestions of sage, mint and grapefruit.
It's a flavourful and well-balanced brew - mildly juicy & acidic, definitely not too bitter; tilting towards the New England pale ale substyle, but not 100% of the way. Lemon, lime and grapefruit are discernible, as are notes of honeydew melon and grainy pale malts. Pithier on the back end, with piney, herbal, floral hops providing a strong counterpoint to the fruity forefront; finishes citrusy, leading into a dry aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with relatively low carbonation that meekly brushes across the palate, contributing to this brew's soft, fluffy, somehwat juicy mouthfeel. Fair drinkability, but I wouldn't want to drink this one after another.
Final Grade: 3.91, a B+. I'm going to damn Slake Handler with faint praise: it's quite good, but I don't *love* it. I can't precisely point to anything specific about this beer that I didn't like, but it didn't grab my attention either, y'know? I would probably take Slake's flagship Hatch pale ale over this collab, but this is still a brew worth trying if you're in a position to do so.
