We're continuing our exploration of hop combinations in IPA form, but with a twist!

Oat Cream refers to the addition of extra oats (often present in beer) and lactose (a less-frequent flyer). These two elements combine to create a silky smooth, full-bodied beer that is at once hugely hoppy and not overly bitter, providing you with great opportunity to use the term "velvety mouthfeel".

This finely balanced IPA is a collab with the team over in K-town, Fine Balance Brewing Co, and is inspired by their NEIPA called Oats & Cream. It's smooth, creamy and delicately sweet, with notes of Pineapple Cream Pie, honeydew melon, and jasmine.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Oct 16 2024 and served barely chilled.

Pours a hazy, turbid pale golden colour, sporting half a finger of loose, bubbly white head that disintegrates within a minute or so. A thin collar remains, with only a few sparse patches of film left on the surface - ok, so it's not a looker. Fortunately, the aroma is fantastic, especially right after cracking open the can. There's orange, pineapple, mango and peach juice, with hints of lemon, guava, sweet cream and perfumedy floral hops.

Moderately sweet, highly fruity flavour profile that makes for a downright delicious hazy IPA. I'm getting orange creamsicle, honeydew melon and grape, with the lactose adding a creamy background sweetness to the mix. Hints of mango, apricot and pineapple juice take the lead from there, concluding with lemon curd, melon and peach notes that dissipate into a floral aftertaste; maybe a touch of hop burn. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation that barely agitates the surface of the palate; the mouthfeel is silky-smooth and satisfying. I could totally enjoy a couple of these in a row.

Final Grade: 4.31, an impressive A grade. A Finely Balanced Oat Cream IPA might be one of the best pale ales I've had in 2024. It's kind of teetering on the edge of being a full-on milkshake IPA, but doesn't quite cross that boundary IMO - it's not really sugary enough, which is definitely a good thing. Excellent work from Bellwoods and Fine Balance, and a must-try if you can find it - I'd eagerly buy this on a regular basis, though knowing that this was a collaboration, it's more likely that I'll never see it again. Oh well: easy come, easy go.
