Oktoberfest is on the horizon, and what better way to celebrate than with delicious beer made with old friends?!
G’Suffa is our take on a Märzen: a classic German style brewed in March, lagered all summer, and enjoyed at Oktoberfest. While ours wasn’t brewed in March, it’s got all the right character: a full-bodied lager with a golden-amber glow, a toffee-forward aroma, and smooth notes of toasted tobacco, mahogany, cacao powder, and a little bit of honey.
Low in bitterness compared to other lagers, this old style beer made with German Mittelfrüh hops is reminiscent of East Coast brown molasses bread.
This beer also marks a special milestone: it’s the first large-scale recipe designed by our brewer Creighton, created alongside his longtime pal Kilian from Outer Range, and it’s Bellwoods’ first Märzen ever. Both share a love for this style (and dark lagers in general), and it shows in every sip.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 16 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear copper-orange colour, with just over an inch of soapy, buff-coloured foam floating atop. Within three or four minutes, it has largely receded, leaving behind a modest collar and filmy cap, as well as a messy coat of delicate lace tendrils. Looks great so far. Clean, malty aroma comprised of lightly caramelized sugars & toasted bread, grains and nuts; hints of honey and floral, spicy, leafy hops can also be coaxed out.
This is a solid märzen: I'm getting lightly caramelized malts, toasted grains and toasted bread, in addition to hints of biscuit and tobacco. Light noble hops on the back end, imparting a leafy, floral bitterness that serves as a counterpoint to the lager's otherwise malt-forward profile; finishes with more toasted bread and light caramel sweetness, persisting into a mildly sweet aftertaste. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation that gently tickles the surface of the palate; feels smooth on the tongue. Impressive drinkability for a relatively strong lager.
Final Grade: 4.1, a very respectable A-. G'Suffa is a quality collaborative effort, and I hope Bellwoods sees fit to brew another batch next autumn. Even though its abv actually leans toward the higher end for this style, I found this to be more even-handed, balanced and crushable than most of the other Ontario märzens I've had over the years. Sure, it's a little sweet - but in the past, my most common complaint about märzens has been that they're too sweet, and this one didn't strike me as inordinately saccharine. The brewery's online store has been sold out for a few weeks now, but if you can find some of this at your local bottle shop, it's worth a try for sure.

OK marzen, too sweet and more paperboard version of flavours, still quaffable. Fresh bottle from the source. Looking for more bold and balanced in the style.

473 ml can served cold from the brewery. Canned September 16, 2025.
Appearance - Rich copper color with good clarity and topped with a finger of light tan head. Lots of bubbles and moderate head retention. Sparse spidery lacing.
Smell - Toast, with some wet leaves leading to a slightly vegetative aroma and some caramel blended in for good measure.
Taste - Rich sourdough toast, some light buttery aspect, some bittering leafy hops, traces of caramel throughout and finishes as bready as it started. Pretty delightful stuff. Tobacco is in here somewhere.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, but leaning towards more full bodied. lighter than average carbonation. Semi-dry finish.
Overall - One of the best Marzens I have in a long while, the freshness and depth of flavors here is exemplary.
