FRILLS is our series of IPAs that leans into the opulence of hops and all that they can do. In the past, we’ve used various hop products to enhance some of our existing brands, but we’ve never had a series specifically dedicated to using them…that’s where FRILLS comes in! FRILLS will allow our brewers to further explore and experiment with these new flavour-boosting hop products, and will include a 6.5% ABV beer as the base.

This installment utilizes Columbus Cryo hops (concentrated hop pellets that are citrusy, dank, earthy, and woody), as well as Citra Incognito (a fluid hop extract that enhances powerful hop flavours and aromas) for notes of blue cotton candy, pineapple, and Flintstones vitamins.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Oct 21 2025 and served slightly chilled.

Pours hazy and turbid with a pale yellow colouration; an aggressive pour manages to scare up half an inch of tight, foamy white head that dissolves within a minute or two. A narrow ring of dense, creamy suds is the most notable remnant; it also deposits a decent swath of sticky lace after each sip. Looks ok so far. Big Citra notes on the nose: lime, grapefruit and lychee, with hints of white grape, tangerine, passion fruit and spicy hops.

The flavours are nice enough, though maybe less varied & impressive than the aroma might've implied. Citrus flavours such as grapefruit and mandarin orange come through early on, followed by notes of pineapple, melon and passion fruit. Slightly herbal & earthy on the back end, with spicy, peppery notes and pithy citrus flavours dissipating gradually into the aftertaste, which is a tad astringent. Medium in body, with restrained carbonation that limply tickles the tongue during each sip, resulting in a smooth, soft mouthfeel that feels a bit flat. Finishing one glass is no problem, but it's not a brew I'd stick with all night.

Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. While it's certainly not a world beater, there's still a lot to like about Frills w/ Columbus Cryo & Citra Incognito. The aroma is its biggest strength IMO, though there's plenty of room for improvement with regard to the visuals, mouthfeel and flavours. Then again, I've repeatedly been underwhelmed by pale ales that made use of similar hop extracts in the past, so there's always the distinct possibility that I just don't like 'em that much. In other words, your mileage may vary substantially. Worth trying while it's still kinda fresh - I'll at least keep an eye out for other Frills variants in the future.

Pours very little foam. Yellow orangey color. Smells of pineapple and mango.
Taste follows the aroma with hints of pineapple and mango juice. A little floral and fruity.
Some citrus rind bitterness.

Decent but nothing spectacular. Would try a frills again if I get a chance.
