Created as an unofficial holiday release beer in 2012, Blitzen is an Imperial Spiced Saison intended to warm you up during the coldest months of the year. This inaugural 2012 batch was brewed with the help of toasted cloves, tangerine and orange peel, and kaffir lime leaves. This boozy warming Saison is bottle-conditioned with champagne yeast, so the resulting spicy brew is effervescent and festive.

Blitzen 2012 went on to win a gold medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards in the Belgian Style Strong Specialty Ale category.

Bottle to tulip.

A - Cloudy medium orange with a golden glow along the bottom. One finger of bright white head formed on the pour.

S - A big Belgian yeast and clove aroma up front with some breadiness and a light citrus presence.

T - Belgian yeast esters and clove up front. Peppery spice, biscuity and bready malt profile, some orange zest.

M - Medium boy with some chew. Moderate carbonation.

On tap at the brewery, into a tulip.

Hazy orange, decent retention and lacing. Nose is heavy clove, other spices, cinnamon and even some herbal and citrus qualities although these aren't as prominent. General saison yeast character. Taste has more clove and heavy herbal hopping. Tangerine flavours are modest, and perhaps sequestered by the cloves and herbal qualities. Alcohol is there, although not incredibly prominent. Spiced far too heavily for me, and there's quite a deal better out there in terms of imperial saisons.

Enjoyed on tap at Bellwoods. This is a very hopped(Amarillo and Cascade) lager. Orange body, lots of trace. Another, and a good addition, to the trend of hoppy drinkable lagers. Mouth tingling.. The hop taste is there, its not hop overwhelming. Slight sugary finish.

The beer is a cloudy dark orange, with a smallish white head. Head fades quickly, some lacing.

Nose contains lots of clove, as well as some orange. Coriander and yeast also present.

The taste is fairly dominated by the spice. Huge amounts of clove, as well as some coriander-like flavours. Orange is present. some yeast flavours. I know that kaffir lime leaves were used but I can't say that I notice them. Quite dry. The clove flavour is too strong for me- really controls the beer.

Medium bodied. highly carbonated. Dries the mouth.

Overall, some good aspects, and I like the orange, but the spicing is just too heavy.
