Collaboration with Le Trou du Diable

The first collaboration brew with our friends from Trou Du Diable (Shawinigan, QC). This Belgian Saison has been fruited (heavily) with Ontario raspberries. Refreshing and dry, with a slightly tart finish and distinctive Belgian yeast character. This rose-coloured ale was released in the summer of 2013. We were lucky enough to go and brew the same recipe again, this time on the big system at Trou Du Diable’s new production brewery!

Bright red colour, pinkish-white head with a bit of lace as well. Smell is full of raspberry, jammy fruit with bit of sweetness and a bit of plasticy yeast like in most Dupont beers. Taste is a mix of raspberry and grainy malts followed by wheaty/yeasty flavours, jammy and not really sweet or tart, tons of fruit in the finish as well. Lightly carbonated, lighter body as well. Decent but nothing really to this other than a bunch of raspberry, still drinkable however.

Bottle: Poured a deep pink color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of fresh raspberries with light malt presence. Taste is dominated by rather dry raspberries with non-descript malt base with light tart finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. Base beer is mostly overshadowed by fresh raspberries taste. Pretty good overall but missing a little something to take it to the next level.

On-tap at Bellwoods.

Pinkish red in colour, with an ultra-small white head (almost none).

Nice raspberry nose, a bit tart. I don't get a lot else, but it is a nice smell. I like raspberry a lot, so I guess that helps!

Taste contains (surprise) raspberry, slightly tart. A dry, yeasty flavour. Refreshing and nice, but not complex or particularly interesting.

Light bodied, moderately carbonated. Refreshing and soft.

Overall, a nice beer, particularly on a hot day, but not a super exciting beer.

Poured on-tap and served in a tulip, the beer is a hazy, bright, raspberry red coloring with a thin, frothy, big bubbles head that settles quickly into a film surface coating. Nose of fresh picked raspberries, roasted grains, and herbal spices. Smooth, light flavors of raspberry sweetness and tart, subtle basil and oregano spice, and a light, bready backbone. Very balanced. Light, smooth bodied. Fruit and spiced aftertaste, with a slightly dry, almost astringent finish. Cleans very well off the palate, and is very easy to drink.
