Poured a gorgeous clear reddish brown with a cap of off-white head. Overall impresson of appearance is of a rather nice Dubbel, though a bit more head would be nice. Scents of spicy Belgian yeast with notes of clove, white pepper and light allspice dominating, malty aromas of breadcrust, and toffee mingle with the phenols, light perfume-like alcohol is also present, as are fruity esters of dark fruit, raisin and plum mostly and light spicy hop aromas. Overall impression of aroma is of a good Dubbel. True to form with regard to malt, phenols and esters. Very pleasant. Flavor begins sweet with notes of white pepper and clove, with malt notes of toffee and bread crust and moderate fruity esters of raisin. Middle continues these flavors, but grows drier with greater amounts of the phenolic spices. Finish is dry and phenolic, with notes of white pepper and clove mingling with flavors of dried cherry and raisin and bread crust. Aftertaste is dry with notes of white pepper, clove and bread crust. Overall impression of flavor is of a nice Dubbel, true to style and quite pleasant, tending towards the drier, spicier side of the style. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a perfect Dubbel. Overall this is a fantastic Dubbel. It excels in aroma, flavor and mouthfeel, coming close to Belgian examples of the style. A true masterpiece.
