Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA
Glass: Firestone 16-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $3.79
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Jan. 8, 2022
Consumed: Jan. 8, 2022
Misc.: Canned on Nov. 10, 2021
Went to Windmill Farms for some bread and a 6-pack of Enegren’s The Lightest One, and came back with nine other singles. Bine & Vine’s website called it “Hop Tooth DIPA is a BEAST of a beer. Clocking in at 8.5%, this aggressively hoppy DIPA is loaded with Citra, Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo, Mosaic, and Strata hops to create aromas of fresh mango, papaya, ripe grapefruit, zesty lime, and resin with a snappy bite. We use mostly two row in the malt bill with a touch of California base malt, creating a subtle malt character without too much body. That lets the tropical hop character shine, making this DIPA incredibly smooth and aromatic with every sip.”
Poured a medium yellow clear color with seven fingers of rocky white head. Could see bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass, faster than the sides of it. Almost perfect foamy lacing. Perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
The Simcoe jumped out on the nose. Also black pepper, resin, onion, garlic, earthy malt, Citra, bitter grapefruit rind, papaya, Strata, weed, grass, floral and some Mosaic. Got a little better as it went down. About as good from the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted a little better than the nose. Simcoe stood out just like the nose, followed by black pepper, resin, onion, garlic, earthy malt, Citra, bitter grapefruit rind, papaya, Strata, lime, weed and grass. Wasn’t really getting any Mosaic. The black pepper was lingering in my throat and on the tongue after. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, dry, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.25)
This one grew on me a little bit each sip. Very good overall. (Overall - 3.75)

Societe has cemented itself as a top tier hop purveyor for about a decade, so it was an easy choice to check out one of their new (to me) offerings at the Bistro double ipa festival in 2022.
Pours yellow. Its not clear. But its not hazy. Cloudy be thy designation. Lays up right in that 1/2" white head zone. Small bubbles. The aroma had that Amarillo and Citra thing: lemon, orange, hay, orchard vibes. I have no idea what the actual hops were, those were my guess. Seemed kind of feint for Societe, but festival beer, who knows how compromised my nose got.
The taste is good but a notch below their flagship Pupil. This also might have Simcoe in it. It has a bitter charge, but not excessively so. In addition to the largely orange and lemon vibe, you get this lime, green leaf and green underripe papaya hit. Feels like some other hop coming at me, but not able to even guess what else. Still going harder on citrus than any other hop flavor. Hides the alcohol pretty well. Light malt body. Neutral in terms of malt and yeast affecting the taste and mouth feel. I'd buy cans of it if I saw them.

Clear golden amber color with long-lasting foam in the IPA glass. The aroma is orange juice, but fortunately the taste is more complex. Loads of fruit flavors that you could tick off on several fingers: mango, citrus peel, orange juice, a spritz of lime. Hot with alcohol but in a nice and tangy way. Sudsy on the tongue and tending toward acidity.
Hop mix is reported to include Citra, Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo, Mosaic, and Strata. Somehow all this melds together in a delightful, fruity delirium. From the 16 oz can purchased at Barons Market. Dated 11/26/21 so perhaps freshness counts.
