We took J.A.W.N. and conditioned it on some coffee from our friends at Grindcore House in South Philly resulting in a classic American Pale full of earthy, cedar, and citrus hop character matched with the fruity coffee notes from the locally roasted beans. This beer was born from a spark of an idea and is sure to give you an unexpected jolt! ABV: 5.2%

12oz can purchased from the fridge as part of a mix-a-six pack for $13.99. No canned on date. From Instagram, this beer was released around October 1, 2025 so that means that it's just over four months old.

Look: It pours out a beautiful amber color. It's more like an orangey gold color that has been tinted a bit brown so it looks amber-esque. Nice, slow lines of fine bubbles are rising up the glass and there is a light khaki-colored head.

Smell: Up front, I get earthy and green notes. There are some dank and citrus notes up front also. The roasty notes from the coffee come on the finish, as well as green bell pepper notes. Smells pretty nice.

Taste: Mmmm, this is interesting. I wasn't sure that this was going to work so well but it actually does. I like how the citrusy hops play up front with the roasty coffee finish. It's nice that the bitterness on the finish is a combination between coffee and hops. It tastes very fresh, which certainly helps. Like the base pale ale, this beer also has a nice caramel malt backbone, which certainly helps to play nicely with the coffee adjunct.

Feel: It has a medium body and a slightly oily mouthfeel. Nicely carbonated.

Overall: This is very interesting and kudos to Neshaminy Creek for pulling it off so well. I actually like this beer more than the base J.A.W.N. Pale Ale, but I could see myself being in the mood to drink the base version more often. I think that this is the first coffee pale ale that I have had also, so I'm glad that it's a good one!

A thanks to the commander of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Despite a gentle pour, this beer came out quickly, resulting in an orange color with a 2 inch head. Smell is of coffee, little else. Taste is of black coffee, hops are pre4sent, not what I expect from this style. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but not an APA.

As the Christmas/Holiday Break approaches and having recently attended the Punk Rock Flea Market at Neshaminy Creek BC, I feel CANpelled to delve into one of their beers for The CANQuest (tm) today.

From the CAN: "American Pale Ale conditioned on organic Rise Up Coffee".

For once, it was a 12-fl. oz. CAN vice a pint & I almost did not know what to do. Suddenly, it came to me! A Crack! of the vent, followed by a slow, gentle C-Line Glug was in order. This resulted in the formation of just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake as it fell. Color was a solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose, while smelling strongly of coffee, did not smell like an APA. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste had an interesting bitterness in that it was difficult to discern where the coffee ended & the hops beCAN or vice versa. Either way, while it was truth in advertising, it was not true to style. Finish was dry and bitter, but again, how much of that was hops & how much was coffee? Personally, I liked it just fine, but I have been a hardcore coffee drinker for over thirty years, dating back to my career in the Navy. YMMV.

(4 oz pour at the brewery)

Clear, amber-colored liquid; bit of sticky foam... on the nose: java bean, leathery fruit, tobacco... on the palate: much the same as the smell, but remarkably dry on the finish... after second sip, biting bitterness (grapefruit, herbal) establishes, and wonderfully so... as it goes, faint essence of caramel and/or hard candy sweetness up front, actually a firm quick pop of it, but gradually gets snuffed out, as the aftertaste shifts over to a latent bitter scream (over and over)... clean, smooth body; perhaps delicate sense of warmth lingering... of my many samplings yesterday, this stood out above the rest; forgot how much I enjoyed the base beer the few times I had it, but this version floored me, and the combo of flavorings is something I generally don't gravitate toward... I'll certainly be buying a sixer of this; actually great! (1524)

EDIT: after some searching did find six packs scattered in random stores, bought the first one I saw... still a fantastic drink... just finished the last of the sixer and I'll soon get another (27 Oct 2019)

This is a new style and taste for me. I've never had such full coffee taste in such a small ABV package. Packed with flavor, but low in alcohol, this one is very interesting. A great choice in the mid-ABV range.

Poured into a small chalice: color is slightly hazy copper to light amber, head is light tan with froth thick head of at least 1 inch, head lingers very well with froth top of at least 1/2 inch for many minutes afterwards.

Smell is quite pleasant with a blend of hops, malt, and lightly roasted coffee; notes are floral, grassy, slightly fruity and some toast and light/medium roast coffee.

Taste is similar with nice mix of malt, coffee, and hops: flavors are light roasted coffee, grapefruit/piney hops, light caramel and toasted malts.

Mouthfeel is on the bitter side of pale ales with an added tinge aged bitterness and moderate carbonation.

Overall a good coffee pale ale with a great blend of coffee seeping through a very good pale ale base.

On tap in a pint glass at Tenessee Beer Hall in AC.

See through dark orange color with a finger’s worth of soft white cap. Lots of sticky lacing.

The citrus and coffee combine for a very pleasant aroma. It’s a bit fruity and true to the brewer’s form, slightly dank and earthy.

Fresh coffee flavor with pale malt, fresh citrus, pine, and a touch of chocolate.

Medium body, well carbonated. Coffee and hop bitterness.

Hoppy with coffee flavor and favorable abc make a good drinker.

-Spiegelau ipa glass from can.

A: Bright orange has a medium rate of clarity, small haziness, with a medium density of quick paced carbonation. Creamy, frothy milk head is sticky and thick in consistency, and well holding, addressing the vessel nicely with thick bands of lace.

S: Lemony fruity coffee scent first on the nose, followed by a fresh roastiness of grounded beans. Some freshly grated chocolate along with some fruity notes from the nugget hops. Really digging the fresh coffee nature on this one. What the eyes don't see, the nose observes.

T: Strange first impression, a rather hearty roastiness from the fresh coffee has a medium dry intensity, despite the brightly colored orange body, which throws off the senses a bit with conflict. Some funky orange peels, sticky hop resins of dry fruit and pine add bitterness and a long lingering after effect.

M: Sticky hop resins on the medium full body. A mid-range amount of carbonation texture and dry bitterness fills the mouthful.

O: A strange experience indeed. Not expecting such a fresh coffee nature from a brightly lit drink. The coffee presence is proud and loud, perhaps overtaking at times the original intentions of the nugget hops. Sticky dry fruit and fresh coffee grounds add for a unique experience worthy a try. Not sure how i would feel about multiples here, but definitely one worth checking out for something unique. Still not sure how well the hoppy coffee style will end up, but its a new fad it seems that adds a new twist in hybrid styling.
