(16 oz can, no date/code of course, 'Imperial Oatmeal Stout'; purchased cold single at Beer Peddlers the other day... poured into a fat tulip)
L: near-black liquid; foam tinted by roasted barley... virtually non-existant foam retention (I'm wondering if the last few oz were sediment-laden)
S: lots of roasted barley on the nose, along with black bread, subtle dark fruit and floral highlights... the dark fruit (prune) becomes more prominent as the head recedes... the aromas have heft and relative punch, but don't quite stir the imagination, instead just start to stun the senses
T: little fruit on the palate, however... mostly a robust roasted grain/malt character; dry in the middle and finish, with the aftertaste sporting deep-toasted bread crust and a subtle espresso note in the center... the alcohol doesn't seem to greatly influence the overall taste, unless it's what's enhancing the little fruit flavor present and/or helping to lengthen the finish... damn, doesn't that oat flavor show up in the aftertaste about halfway through
F: the body is any silkier or smoother than other Imperial-strength stout, maybe due to the quiet storm of ethanol which slowly sedates the body, stretching the viscosity... toward the end, the booze and bitter roast fuse to stun the palate, almost giving a smoky sting
O: I'm a fan of NCB, love their label art, and I'll try anything from them that looks interesting... their stouts always seem to fall short of greatness, and I'm not sure if it's water chem or malt brands or whatever, but they could be so much more (across the board I guess too...) (2156)
