The clear golden colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 3/4” white head that persists for a long time while leaving a few scattered small patches of lacing on the sides.

The aromas are almost entirely about the watermelon. Some malt and wheat are showing are way in the background. There is also a bit of herbal character.

Not surprisingly the flavors are pretty much as expected from the nose and mostly about the watermelon. The malt and wheat are way in the background along with a touch of herbal bitterness. The light sweetness blends nicely with the herbal and almost citric bitterness.

The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied and gently prickly from the finely bubbled persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the watermelon and grainy sweetness begin to fade to allow the herbal, citric bitterness to close out the show as it slowly fades away to a dry ending in the back of the palate while showing a light bit of watermelon that can still be tasted long after every thing else is gone. (A bit too long in my view.)

Overall this is a reasonably drinkable refreshing beer that seems to be what the brewer intended, a summer refresher. It’s a nice change of pace but not something I’ll return to very often as I’m a fan of watermelon but not watermelon flavored anything else.

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is pale straw, slight haze, head is brighter white with fine bubbles and a 1/4 inch depth, some lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is watermelon flavoring, hint of rind maybe not much else.

Taste is watermelon flavoring, light malt, no adjunct or odd off notes but just not exciting or anything other than watermelon flavor (not watermelon puree or rind).

Mouthfeel is strongly carbonated, initial softness on the tongue but then a bitterness that dries out the tongue way to much.

Overall beer that you might envision a watermelon flavored beer tasting like, but nothing to distinguish among others.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear light golden pour. Thick fizzy head... falls fast. Modest rim of lacing.

S: Watermelon juice... nailed it.

T/F: Very light... mild grains... strong watermelon flavor/watermelon juice. Not much else going on. Fizzy carbonation... fruity. Mild sweetness. The finish is... more watermelon.

O: A light watermelon flavored beer... nothing fancy... delivers what it promises. Not much of a fan, but again... at least they delivered what they advertised.

Today is another occasion of #WatermelonWednesday a proud tradition as a part of #BumpTheHump & I hope that you can join the movement!

From the Bottle: "Watermelon Ale with Natural Flavor Added".

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour into my awaiting glass. It was not creating much head on its own, so I helped it along with an -n-glass swirl to create just over a finger of foamy, fizzy, bone-white head with modest retention, quickly returning to wisps. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled of watermelon, but more bitter than sweet and not even Jolly Rancher sour, either. Mouthfeel was on the thin side, not watery, but close. The taste was watermelon, but not sweet or sour, just kind of a weak representation of the taste. I have had much better watermelon beers on #WatermelonWednesday & I would guess that if you search that hashtag, you will find them. Finish was dry, but I just felt unfulfilled. I never really connected with the watermelon flavor & since that was the point of this beer, that represents a sing & a miss to me. It was refreshing, but so is a glass of water, which is what I am reaching for next. YMMV.

Evil Genius Beer Company "ICANTEVEN"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BTLON:041218 11:53 AM" and sampled on 051518
$2 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: So we've got a simple beer here, half barley, half wheat, and watermelon flavoring. It's poured a lightly hazy straw gold body beneath a finger-thick head of creamy bright white. The aroma is clearly watermelon and I'm not getting any malt coming through it. It seems kind of natural though, even though it is "natural flavor" which means 'extract', with a kind of vegetal note that goes beyond just fruitiness. On to the flavor... no surprise, it's watermelon all over again! It's just as bright and strong, and again, I'm not really getting a lot of malt character beyond it. There's some, mostly at the swallow and then a little bit in the finish but this is a watermelon bomb! In fact, I think it's overdone which is odd for me to say because I'd usually be of the mind that if you're going to do it go all out. It doesn't seem that bitter but there must be some there balancing it as it finishes mainly dry with - you guessed it - watermelon lingering. In the mouth it's medium-light in body with a gently effervescent crispness. Looking back the head help up pretty well and it left some nice lacing. It's a good looking glass of beer. How to rate it though with all of that watermelon? It's not a defect, it's just a little too much. On the other hand, maybe other people will find it just right... ? I'll just say it's worth trying if you're a big fan of watermelon.
