Unique and highly expressive barrels age a beer developed just for them, in this never-to-be-repeated articulation of beer, time, and oak. Young French oak red wine casks from Saxum Vineyards in Paso Robles, CA impart equally heady measures of lush vanilla and baking spice to this sumptuous, sweet black English barleywine.

Canned 2022/07/07
Pours a creamy fluffy 2 finger brown head with moderate retention, soapy lacing, dark but clear mahogany ruby color

Nose brings lots of sweet malt, syrupy, candy syrup, toffee, with a little char, burnt marshmallow, nougat, a bit of dark fruit, some toasted oak, a bit nutty, sticky toffee almost butterscotch

Taste starts quite sweet, stale caramel candy, toffee, sweet sticky toffee and caramel candy sugar syrup, butterscotch, quite sweet overall, fair alcohol warmth, a bit nutty, mild char and more of that burnt marshmallow, sweet candied fruits, a little buttery oak, hint of chocolate, a mild aged oxidation, mild bitterness, stick sweet finish

Mouth is fuller bod, sticky syrupy, lower carb, fair warming slight tingly alcohol

Overall this was way too sweet and syrupy, flavors were decent but this was borderline undrinkable

Pours an effervescent & somewhat chill hazed mahogany with a sliver of tan head. Some good head retention & lacing.

S: Rich dark fruit, oakyness

T: Barrel burn, figs, caramel, molasses, barrel bite up front. Figs, raisins, barrel bite with vanilla on the backside as this beer warms up, Finishes with so much chewyness, dark fruit & barrel booze bite, Plenty of vanilla, treacle & oak

MF: Chewy, but lively carbonation, warming booze bite

Wel worth a go, Not as put together as some of their others; but pretty good

2022 vintage (canned on 7/7/2022); consumed on 12/26/2023

Pours a clear, deep jet-mahogany body sporting slight ruby accents and topped with two fingers of fluffy, beige-hued foam; good head retention leaves a choppy half-finger of cap, slim, frothy collar, and the occasional splotching of webby lacing clinging tentatively to the walls of the glass.

Aromas of toffee and red currant jam open, with accents of oatmeal cookie finding a deft barrel backing before softening with notes of cherry cola, nutty Sherry, and subtly integrated vanillins.

Taste opens to red currant jam, hints of Sherry, and cherry cola, with melted marshmallow impressions and a touch of cocoa firming sweetness over the mid-palate as oaky red wine lingers into the finish.

Mouthfeel brings a medium body and moderate-mild carbonation, semi-sticky into robust tannins trending twangy through the mid-palate as a level dryness counters to form a silky back end.

A quirky profile coated in distinct dark fruit saturation, the wine barrel imparts unique yet not entirely foreign notes to the barleywine style, with heavier roast lingering to an effective equilibrium.

12 ounce can into a snifter. Canned 7/7/12, had 8/19/22.

Pours a reddish copper color, semi opaque, with a flash of a head and a few specks of lacing. Aromas of caramel, malt, tobacco, grapes, some oak, light char, light red wine. Flavors of malt, caramel, grapes, red wine, oak, a light hop bitterness on the finish. There’s a little bit of a sweet note. Smooth, a very good medium body, appropriately carbonated.

The wine barrels and the base barleywine are excellent, with well developed aromas and flavors. It is a little bit sweeter than expected. Very enjoyable.

I imagine this wild hog… One a bit different from the sounder. He doesn’t think he’s better, and he doesn’t think that he’s cooler than any other hog. He struts - not because he wants to - but because he was born to. And that’s this beer. No pomp. No, “It’s my birthday month!” It’s just there. Maybe a bit different, but more so beautiful.

Blind review: Mystery Beer #2 from @FBarber in NBS BIF #17
12 oz can with a gold top.
This one pours a deep brown with burgundy and garnet glimmers. Initially fluffy head tapers off to a khaki film. Pretty.
Nose is barleywine, glorious English barleywine. Toffee, dates, figs, smooth caramel notes. Wow.
Taste brings much of the same with some other fruity notes that are blended and deep. Prune, date, fig, with a mild hint of stewed apples.
It's fairly full in feel, a bit viscous as well.

Going to sip a bit, really soak this one in before committing 100% to barleywine.

So, I love this one. Heftier than most barleywines, but that just adds to the pleasure. As for the wine barrel, I'm guessing this imbued the fruit flavors that were hard to nail down. As it warmed, and I searched, I picked up a hint of what I thought was a hint of port wine, deep and dry. But again, this was after about 20 minutes and REALLY trying to figure out those fruity notes.

Oh my, this is different and sooooo good. It is quite sweet, I get lots of vanilla, brown sugar, sweet red wine, light wood, and more. Overall I get a strong impression of marshmallow that I don't recall every experiencing in a beer. That's not quite right but it's the best I can come up with. This is a gem.

Another Revolution Deep Woods can? Say it ain’t so! 12 ounces of nirvana headed down the hatch..already sampled this so I know what I’m in for.

The pour is deepest red, like the torchlight reflecting off Smaug’s scales. Tons of wine in the nose, along with aimless, wandering sweetness.

Lumberstruck is brilliant. I’m on record as doubting wine will improve any beer but here it’s like Sam & Frodo. Plum wine, port wine, maple, & a roll of booze that picks at my synapses are the drivers, with a slight bit of tartness from the barrels, oak, with a slow slide into a brown sugar sweetness on the finish. I could drink a lot of this, if I could find more.

This melding of barleywine & wine barrels is magnificent. An elite effort: wow.
