Barleywine aged in a wheated Weller barrel, then transferred to a French cognac barrel. The end result is a beautiful blend of gingerbread and vanilla up front, with fig and orange zest coming to play later on the palette. Smooth and dangerous.

Look: It pours dark brown with a tan head. It has average head retention.
Smell: Strong aromas of toffee, oranges and fig up front. There are some molasses notes with cognac and bourbon. There is a slight sherry touch well into the background. The bourbon and cognac aromas are well blended with the barleywine aromas as a compliment to them, instead of overwhelming them.
Taste: There are strong toffee and fig flavors blended with bourbon and orange. There are some cherry pipe tobacco notes with cognac and a slight touch of sherry.
Feel: It has a full body and very strong, but yet pleasant alcohol warming.
Overall, a full bodied beer with complex flavors that are blended well. The bourbon is a tad stronger than I would like, but this does not detract from the overall quality of the beer.

Appearance: Pours coffee colored with a one finger beige head that rapidly fades to a collar; speckles and streaks
Smell: Caramel, fig, date and gingerbread with the Cognac barrel prominent and the Bourbon barrel discernable
Taste: The Cognac barrel makes a statement, at the outset, and dominates throughout, with the Barleywine flavors of caramel, fig, date and gingerbread rummaging underneath; at the very end, a hint of the Bourbon barrel appears to add an interesting twist
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation; some warmth in the gullet
Overall: A lot ot like here, with a nice English Barleywine character and a sophisticated barrel treatment; I might prefer more Bourbon, though
