Ruby colored with a fingernail of off-white to pine creamy foam on top. The aroma is of merlot and oak. The flavor is more like wine than beer with intense oak and moderate merlot. The moderately carbonated and is what is here to remind me that this is a beer. It's also a bit chewy which fits the ABV. I find it rather dry which is likely due to the oak barrel.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle with no visible date. The beer pours a deep ruby red with almost no head and very lacing.

The smell is strong cherry, oak, and a nice slightly boozy red wine. Very nice smelling beer.

The taste is sweet and slightly boozy with a more subdued cherry flavor, some dark fruits, oak, and something sweet like caramel on the finish. A very complex flavor.

The mouthfeel is effervescent carbonation, slightly oily, and medium thickness.

Overall this is a nice, complex, fruity beer that should be enjoyed slowly at 13.2%.

Pours a rubyish brown color with very little head. Smell is full of dark fruit.....raisin, red grapes, blackberry, fig, and dark cherry. Taste follows the same notes. The merlot barrel gives this beer almost a port / fortified wine type quality. This red ale has the perfect amount of sweetness....helps balance the alcohol and adds to the overall drinkability. Body is medium with low carbonation. Overall, this is a unique BA beer and worth checking out.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 1/2016. Pours crystal clear dark ruby red/light purple color with a 1-2 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, blackberry, raspberry, currant, red grape, pepper, toasted oak, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, light vanilla/coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, grapes, and wine barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, blackberry, raspberry, currant, red grape, pepper, toasted oak, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, light vanilla/coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light tannic wine/oak spiciness and fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, blackberry, cherry, currant, red grape, pepper, toasted oak, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, grapes, and wine barrel flavors; with a great malt/oak/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from tartness and wine/tannic oak spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly acidic/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mild warmth with zero booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding fruited imperial red ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, grapes, and wine barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Very rich and complex with pretty much perfect balance of red wine and imperial red flavors. Never overly sweet despite the intense malt presence, thanks to the tannic wine barrel notes that are never overpowering. A highly enjoyable offering.
