Imperial Red Ale fermented with Cabernet Sauvignon grape juice and aged in California Merlot oak wine barrels. Oak, malt, and grapes blend together making it hard to tell where flavor begins and ends.

22 ounce bottle into a tulip glass. Had 4/4/17.
Pours a deep purplish ruby, fairly opaque, with a half inch head and some foamy lacing. Active carbonation. Good looking. Smells of red wine, purple grapes, light malt, figs, raisins, light toffee, some brown sugar. The taste is similar, with red wine, purple grapes, malt, figs, raisins, dates, some oak, light caramel. Light hop bitterness underneath. Smooth, a solid medium body that hides the high ABV really well, well carbonated.
A really interesting effort, with deep, complex flavors and an expressive aroma. Definitely wine forward, which I found to be a big plus on this one. Fun to drink, and well worth a purchase.

Hearty dark amber red with a tan head and lacing. Smell is weird for sure: so much red wine! Oak too. Has a certain must to it that clashes slightly with the hops but bready malts work well with the barrel. Taste is a balm to my concerns: dark fruit in an amber, yes you read that right, grape, raisin, brown bread, earth, oak, dark red wine, with accenting roasted nuts, toast, and pepper. One of the strangest beers I've had, but if this is wrong I don't want to be right! Feel is vinous, malty, medium bodied and generally has very dark complexion on the palate.
