Skully Barrel No. 43: Vanilla Peaches

500ml bottle served in a pair of snifters.

Pours a clear golden with a slight brassy tinge, small head, and not much carbonation. Smell is tart, unripe peachy.

Taste is vanilla and fruit -- not overwhelming, kind of soft and soothing. Definitely tart, but not super tart.

Mouthfeel is dry and light. Over all, good beer.

 

 

 

Poured into a Double Barley can-shaped glass. Label says 2016.

A- Pours a light amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and minimal surface foam. Nearly no lacing.

S- Interesting aroma of candied peach and light Brett.

T- Initial flavor of Brett and peaches followed by moderate sourness and acidity. Sweet in the front, dry in the back. No one element juts out farther than the other. The vanilla is mild and there's an aftertaste of peach skin.

M- Dry and tart with medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- There's not a really a whole lot going on here. Some sweetness from the peach and vanilla plus a decent amount of sourness. One could say it's well balanced but I just find it a bit boring. Would like some more funk.

 

Appearance - Pours semi transparent yellow with very thin white head that completely disappears no lacing.

Aroma - Peaches, oak, vanilla, the wine is noticeable as well. Slightly tart and acidic aroma and a little funk.

Taste - Nice tart flavor, the peaches and vanilla are there, hints of oak and wine as well. This is not an overly sour beer it is well balanced.

Feel - Light bodied well carbonated, not as tart as expected and slightly dry finish.

Overall - A very good sour they did a good job making sure the peaches and vanilla show up in this sour.

 

 

 

 

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 12.99. No bottling date but this is a 2016 vintage. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.

Pours a barely opaque pale gold with a finger and a quarter white head. The light froth quickly settles to a slivered moon that hugs the edge framed by a thin band. No lacing.

The nose is dully sour. Overripe peaches, wine barrel, earthy hay and some light vanilla.

The flavor is considerably more sour than the aroma let on. Near puckering sour grapes, overripe peach purée, softly sweet vanilla, white wine infused oak, wet old grass, fruit skins and vaguely funky earth.

Medium, almost chalky feel with bright, peppy carbonation. Aftertaste of semi tart, wine soaked peaches and wet, oaky vanilla.

Vanilla Peaches is another interesting and delicious project from Paradox. The appropriately paradoxical mixture of sour fruit and sweet vanilla works well. These guys have a pretty good track record with me and I look forward to their future offerings.

 

 

A: deep golden to amber orange. Thin white bubbles.

S: funk. Peaches. Vanilla bean.

T: super sour up front. Kinda musty oak. Then flows into creamy vanilla and crisp peaches.

F: harsh and puckering but finishes very soft and subtle

O: this is good. It could have been awesome. But it has an unfinished rawness to it holding it back a bit
