Mahogany black with a very tall, tan foam head.
Wow, as my buddies told me, this is more chocolatey than expected, but in the finish, where it exhibits a sort of dark sweetness. Before that, its frothy body delivers classic tobacco, coffee and leafy schwarz roasts before it lightens and slicks up a little. After some time, I even get hints of amaretto.
Crushable.

Canned on 12/21/22. CBF Tulip. Rated as a schwarzbier.
A: opaque black, hints of brown at the edges. One finger sandy head. No lacing. Darker than a schwarzbier.
S: sweet dark chocolate. Roasty sweetness. Almost smells milky, like a cafe au lait or a milk stout. Has that lactose quality on the smell. Maybe even a hint of molasses. Not out and out burnt.
T: arrives moderately sweet, with a chocolatey and dark roast coffee center, turning to a drying off-bitter finish that is equal parts unsweetened Dutch process cocoa dust and herbal noble hops. Lingering light roasty bitterness. Perfect schwarzbier.
M: superb; slightly lighter in weight, but slick in feel with moderate carbonation. Not cloying at all; pleasant on this 70 degree night.
O: hard I seen the date on this, I wouldn’t have bought it, and that would’ve been a shame because this is delicious. It really reminds me of a lighter textured Porter. It is more bitter than many of the dark lagers I’ve had lately, which is a good thing. It’s also slightly slicker, oilier. That’s fine by me; if it were too crisp it’d be off-balance. Hood can do lagers, too! Worth buying a four pack in Jan.-Mar. not in May, though. I’d take this over Founders Porter, and that’s saying a lot.

12 ounce can, canned on 12/14/21. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a very dark brown color with about an inch or so tan head that stuck around a while. Lacing is good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and some earthy hops. Taste is similar enough to the aroma, but with the addition of some burnt/charred malt and nuttiness. Hop character is a little stronger than I expected but that's not a complaint at all. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's smooth and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good overall dark lager, certainly worth trying if you get the chance.
