The final iteration of our pale ale project marks the conclusion of our experimental phase. The winning hop combination from 8 previous pilot batches was the power trio of Centennial, Amarillo and Citra. Never a bad time for a crisp and refreshing all season session ale. 28 IBU.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned September 30/24. My 8th beer from the Ottawa, Ontario brewery, and 2nd for 2026. Exquisitely embraced by Gracie the cat...

Pours straw yellow with a bit of haze and a diminutive head that musters up lots of lace. The aroma is of citrusy, floral, tropical hops with a bit of bready malts. The taste is of lemon and grapefruit hops with doughy, grainy pale malts in the back. The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with medium carbonation. Fruity, tropical fruits and moderate bitterness in the long finish.
A well balanced, complex APA. Definitely worth a try.

Pours a slightly hazy straw colour with active carbonation leading to thin white film which leaves a bit of white lacing. Aroma is fruity citrus. Taste gives a nice bright burst of citrus hops with a bit of lemon, some floral & grassy as well as smooth bitterness. Taste and feel are just a touch watery though making this taste like the session that it is. Flirts with greatness, but like most sessions, falls just short of providing that full hoppy, smooth flavour & feel.

Tallboy from a London-area LCBO, one of four BtP brews I nabbed while in the area. No canning date; served slightly chilled.
Pours hazy golden-yellow in colour; looks extremely effervescent, with swarms of bubbles swirling upwards through the column of liquid, while at its surface, more than two fingers of fluffy, sparkling white head gathers. This thick layer of foam proves to be extremely resilient - it actually rises above the rim of the glass for a few minutes before finally beginning to erode in the opposite direction (another 10 minutes). Amazing coat of lace; this is plain straight-up gorgeous beer. Smells of citrusy lemon zest, grapefruit and apricot, with hints of melon, floral hops and indistinct tropical fruit. Well, I'm enticed.
Very tasty stuff. The flavour profile follows after the nose - citrusy hop flavours of grapefruit, orange and lemon peel figure in prominently, underlain by a steady background of grainy wheat and light, doughy malt sweetness. Light hints of apricot and tropical fruit, with a floral, grassy bitterness at the finish . Medium in body, with light carbonation and a smooth, slick texture with slight viscosity. Very satisfying mouthfeel, and fantastically easy to drink - a definite session candidate.
Final Grade: 4.19, a very solid A-. The Pale Ale Project is unequivocally one of the best new Ontario pale ales that I've tried in 2017. It's also the first Beyond the Pale product I've tried, as I live quite far from Ottawa (and am probably well outside their distribution range), but I am duly impressed with it and will definitely keep an eye out for more. I don't expect this to become commonplace in my neck of the woods anytime soon, but I'll hope it does anyway. Hopheads are encouraged to grab one, or maybe even an armful if you can confirm its freshness.

473 ml can, served cold into a pint glass. Purchased from the local Fortinos, now with a beer and wine section.
Appearance - Hazy, with a rich golden color and some orange-ish hues. Lots of head, nearly two fingers worth which is sparkling and white and cascading rings of lacing. Pretty good head retention.
Smell - Plenty hoppy with lots of citrus, orange and grapefruit mostly with a hint of lemon zest. Very good aromas.
Taste - Some citrus but also plenty of malt that is subtle but provides for a nice balancing act. Orange is most prominent with bits of grapefruit and lemon again.
Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, crisp plenty of carbonation but not gassy. Tingling sensations on the tongue.
Overall - Really, really solid pale ale. This is going into the rotation if there is wider distribution. Two thumbs up. A cut above many other pale ales.

Pale amber body - looks like a quintessential pale ale, basically, with one finger of slightly off-white head and a lot of moving bubbles.
The smell is malt-forward and mostly bready, but there is a notable undertone of pine hops.
The standout feature of this beer's flavor is its complete absence of sweetness. It hits you first with a clean, dry taste, then some decent bitterness comes in, but that gives way to a dry, slightly bitter and even slightly tart and salty finish. The overall impression is pretty good, although unusual.
Mouthfeel is very clean and dry. Even though I know this comes from a lack of flavor (along with a high level of fizz), it is a pleasant sensation. This beer would be a very flexible one to pair with food, as it hardly lingers at all on the palate.
Between the mouthfeel and the hints of tartness and salt in the flavor this strikes me as being somehow inspired by the gose style. It is far from the typical pale ale, and while it does not overshadow the typical pale ale in my estimation I'm glad I tried it. Its overwhelming lack of sweetness will definitely endear it to those of a certain taste.
