473 mL can, day 20 of the 2022 Toronto Brewing beer advent calendar; dated Sep 23 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly hazed straw yellow colour, topped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that disintegrates within a minute or two. A modest swath of lace is scattered about behind it, with a frothy, sudsy collar and cap left floating upon the surface. The nose is grainy, grassy and gritty, with hints of bready, doughy pale malt sweetness and orchard fruit.
The flavour profile differs only marginally from the original: I'm tasting grainy pale malts, wheat and crackery sweetness, with hints of red apple and some vinousness. This is followed by grassy, herbal hop bitterness on the back end; clean-ish aftertaste, but not as clean as the filtered version, with briefly lingering grain husk and grassiness. Light-bodied, with average carbonation that adds some bite to this brew's smooth, slightly crisp mouthfeel. Refreshing and sessionable, just like the original.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. I did this review side-by-side with a can of Clean Cut 'classic' for comparison purposes, and other than the slight visual differences, they are ultimately very similar products. This unfiltered variant is not quite as clean and crisp as the original, but it does have a little more of that vinous note I like in a kolsch - depending on what you like, you may see this as an improvement, or a wash. I'd happily take either one of them, but I suppose I'll have to settle for the classic filtered version for now, because that's all the local LCBO carries.
