Bursting with juicy pineapple and bright citrus, Shea Brett IPA is brewed and dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Ekuanot and Amarillo hops and fermented with Vermont Ale Yeast and Brettanomyces in our oak foeders. Golden in colour, this complex and hazy IPA is medium bodied with subtle flavours of spiced clementine, cantaloupe and hay with a dry finish. 60 IBU.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 355mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned May 9/25. My 16th beer from the Toronto, Ontario brewery, and 7th for 2026. Exquisitely embraced by Sundae the cat...

Pours cloudy amber with a frothy head. Loads of foam drape the glass. The aroma is of farmhouse brett, lemon rinds and earth. The taste is funky with horse blanket and barnyard brett notes and a restrained citrusy hop character in counterpart. Full bodied and moderately carbonated. Medium bitterness and lingering brett funk in the finish.
A nice brett IPA with a generous brett profile. Worth a try.

355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Sep 3 2024 and served barely chilled. Reviewed from notes taken last December.
Pours a foggy blonde colour, topped with two fingers of lumpy, soapy white head that settles off over the next five minutes or so. A sudsy, patchy cap is left over, surrounded by a generous collar of froth, with some delicate lace deposited onto the glass. Musty barnyard funk on the nose, with added notes of oak, lemon and cantaloupe, as well as vegetal pepper, pine, woodsy/spicy hops and oaked white wine.
The flavours are intriguing, but it's not much of an IPA. Orchard fruits, cantaloupe, orange peel and white wine quickly lose ground to herbal, piney hops, musty barnyard funkiness and phenolics. Oak, wine tannins, resiny bitterness and barnyard funk last beyond the finish, dissipating into a leathery aftertaste that clings tenaciously to the tastebuds. Medium in body, with active carbonation - feels prickly and frothy, with a smooth, fluffy mouthfeel that works well here. Not super drinkable, but finishing one can is no trouble.
Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. Shea IPA is clearly the most creative and unique pale ale in this mixed pack, but I don't think it's my favourite - that honour goes to Greenwood. I don't recall having all that many Brett IPAs in the past, so I can't rightfully claim this to be either a good or bad example of one. I will say that the leathery aftertaste hurts its drinkability, and if I were grading this strictly as an IPA, its grade would be significantly lower. That being said, I enjoy Brett beers, and while this one does leave much to be desired, I appreciated the change of pace. I doubt that this has the 'mass appeal' needed to justify its own SKU at the LCBO, but if they stock it, I will come.

Part of the Left Field 6 pack of IPA's. Served cold into a pint glass. Canned September 3, 2024.
Appearance - Hazy golden brew with a finger and a half of foamy white head that has good retention. Some sparse spidery lacing clings to the edges of the glass.
Smell - Some funkiness for sure. I get apple skins, some horse blanket, with a light citrusy background. The apple skins are definitely most prevalent.
Taste - Some apple, earthiness, kind of a general barnyard flavor, light bitterness with some citrus barely kissing the palate. Not really bitter but funky. An indeterminate moderate flavor lasts long past the last sip.
Mouthfeel - The foaminess has some texture here, almost chunky, while the rest of the beer is medium bodied and well carbonated.
Overall - Shea IPA is a little wild, and while not really an IPA it's not really anything else, maybe just a Brett beer. Not my favorite, but the creativity warrants inclusion in a mixed pack like this.

This is a Brett IPA. Or at least that is the claim on the can.
Pour slightly more lagery than regular IPAs, we have a very gentle honey/malt nose and foamy head.
Well, this is a questionable Brett beer, to say the least. There is some of it in here, yes, but it's way outperformed by bitter hops and malt. A good Brett IPA has more yeast and skank (of course balanced off nicely). This focuses more on the hops. Way too bitter for a Brett IPA. Very dry as well.
Look, Left Field is not a bad brewery, but somehow they fall short on near all their style attempts. No exception here.
