Our second release using the elusive Phantasm powder is a hazy, extra juicy, hop-forward East Coast style Pale Ale. This experimental ingredient from New Zealand is a powder derived from Sauvignon Blanc grapes that’s packed with thiols - a juicy and tropical compound in hops. Paired here with El Dorado, Galaxy and Sabro hops, resulting in a hugely aromatic and flavourful brew packed with pineapple, gooseberry and coconut flavour and aroma.

355 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated Nov 8 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours cloudy and turbid, its pale yellow-coloured body briefly topped with half a finger of smooth, foamy white head that fizzles off within a minute or two. A few scant flecks of lacing are tossed about, with a thin collar remaining in place - looks like a NEPA to me, and - WHOA, I lost my train of thought because that first whiff is just pure juiciness. There's white grape, tangerine, mango and pineapple, with hints of coconut, pear and banana candy.

It's a solid hazy pale ale, quite fruity but perhaps a little lacking in balance and drinkability. I'm getting white grape, pineapple, stone fruit, passion fruit and mandarin orange, piled atop hints of wheaty, crackery pale malt sweetness. Tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple persist through the finish and into the aftertaste, which has a coconut flavour that I am not real big on. Also kind of acidic, in the 'hop acid' sense (not the 'sour' sense). Medium in body, with moderate carbonation featuring tiny bubbles that continuously prickle the palate with each sip, adding a little bit of bite to this brew's smooth, soft mouthfeel. It's drinkable enough, but kind of a palate exhauster - one can per night would be fine with me, but I'd want to move on to something else.

Final Grade: 3.82, a B+. Left Field's Phenom is good, but is it actually phenomenal? There's no doubt that it's got a deliciously fruity aroma, but my main gripe is with that coconut flavour (Sabro hops strike again). Of course, if you enjoy - or don't care about - coconut, there's always the chance you'll like this more than I did. It's well worth a try, but not really my thing.
