355 mL can from the LCBO, one of three Blackburne variants included in LF's winter mixed pack. Dated Sep 29 2022 and served barely chilled.

Pours jet black and opaque, generating roughly one finger of creamy, dark tan-coloured head that disintegrates within two or three minutes' time. A thin collar and some wisps on the surface are the only remnants, with relatively scant lace deposition - looks more or less like the original. The orange zest adds a citrusy, aromatic element to the aroma that kind of overpowers the rest of the bouquet; hints of dark chocolate, prune, molasses, licorice and ethanol come through after sniffing long enough.

Rich flavours of chocolate fudge and dark chocolate at the forefront, but the orange zest & oil notes are equally forceful. Hints of dark fruit, licorice, molasses and herbal hops towards the finish, with orange zest, licorice and dark chocolate persisting into a moderately boozy aftertaste. Full-bodied, with very low carbonation and a soft, smooth, somewhat oily mouthfeel; good drinkability for nearly 10%, but the orange becomes tiresome by the end of the glass.

Final Grade: 3.97. a B+. Blackburne Chocolate Orange is still pretty tasty, but I'd consider it a slight downgrade from the original. The orange zest is pleasant enough at first glance, but IMO it's a little too heavy handed: it runs roughshod over the rest of the aroma, and serves as more of a distraction (vs. a complement) within the flavour profile. Then again, the chocolate/orange combo has never been a big draw for me, so maybe it's just a personal preference thing. I'd drink this again, but it's low priority, as I'd take regular Blackburne over this every single time.

355 ml can as part of the imperial stout Christmas pack. Canned September 29, 2022. Served cold into a chalice.

Appearance - Very black with a finger of dark tan head. Decent staying power but no lacing to speak of. Ominous.

Smell - Some chocolate but lots and lots of orange, over the roasty and chocolatey bits. Quite inviting.

Taste - Initially front loaded with orange, then a bit of dark chocolate before finishing more bitter with roasty bits. A touch of wood and more bitter than on the back end.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied, some boozy warmness in the back of the throat. Fairly highly carbonated for this style and lasting bitterness on the tongue.

Overall - Well constructed beer that hits the right aromas and notes, but there's something about it that leaves me wanting more. More balance in integration of the orange and chocolate together maybe. With that said still a nice addition to the mixed pack.
