I was very skeptical of this beer. Pleasantly surprised doesn't begin to describe.
Nice-looking beer, approachable barleywine, decent head, tiny bubbles. Great on the nose, plenty of barley sweetness with a bit of barrel funk. Mouthfeel is nice, plenty of carbonation.
On the tongue this starts as a traditional, if smooth, barleywine. Then the smoothness takes over, dipping into an almost toffee-like flavor. And the finish lasts forever, just sticks with you.
Overall this is just a great beer. Honestly don't get much tequila at all, but I rarely do with tequila barrel brews (the few I've had). But the barrel just mellows out the barleywine and makes it so smooth. Maybe my low expectations for the style (I do love their coffee IPA) made this that much better, but what a beer.
Note: It ain't cheap, even at the brewery. One of the most expensive per-ounce beers I've bought, aside from some BA sours.
