The beer pours a nice brownish tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. The beer itself is a very nice looking dark chocolate black with an interestingly thin looking beer. The texture is interesting and looking pretty nice because it has a thinnish appearance but still maintains a thickness.
The smell is pretty good. It has a nice strong and slightly acidic coffee note with a bit of vanilla and lactose. The smell also has an edge of dark chocolate cocoa nibs that give it a nice bit of sweetness but is very faint. There is not much banana in the smell.
The taste is very good. The taste mainly contains strong dark notes varying from coffee, chocolate, a light roasted malt note, and a nice vanilla note. The strongest notes are the coffee and vanilla; both which keep the other from being too overwhelming. The banana note is fairly light compared to the other two but it manages to come out fairly well in the finish and the beginning but seems to get lost a little in the middle. There is a nice acidic and dark coffee note lingering afterwards. Also, there is a sweet dark chocolate cocoa nib note that surrounds the more bitter coffee notes but gets swallowed up otherwise. The rye whiskey note is there but gets lost among the coffee but it definitely adds a nice bit of spice with very little alcohol notes to it.
The feel is good. It has a heavy bodied beer that has an interestingly thin body that manages to retain some heft and a bit of smoothness.
Overall, this a very good beer and perfect for the cold weather. It has a nice and strong and balanced taste with a very good body. If you're thinking about whether you want to trade or go for this, I'd say do it.
