I don't see a bottle date listed. From the back of the bottle on the label: "No. 88/900"
The label states: "bourbon barrel aged imperial stout"
Appearance: It has a black body with a short, khaki, creamy textured head. It keeps a short ring of foam around the glass. No retention other than the ring. It leaves spotty bubbles for lacing.
Aroma: It pushes out a strong alcoholic, bourbon aroma as soon as the beer is poured. It can be smelled at arms length. Getting in closer gives off notes of chocolate and a bit of plum. There is a bit of a pipe tobacco aroma to the beer.
Taste: It has a very strong flavor of alcohol that comes through right from the start. It tastes much higher than the label advertised "10% ALC. BY VOL." There is some wood character that comes through and a lot of more char flavor than would be expected from an Imperial Stout. There is a bit of a cocoa character towards the end. There is a touch of woody character to the finish. The flavors of this beer align more with a Russian Imperial Stout.
Mouthfeel: The alcohol in the beer is very apparent. There is also a strong carbon bitterness to the beer. Both of these factors reduce drinkability quite a bit. The beer has a good body, being full but not too thick or syrupy.
Overall: It doesn't do a good job of concealing the alcohol but the beer has a nice charred woody character with a hint of cocoa. It is a very slow drinker compared to other Imperial Stouts on the market with equal or greater alcohol content. Still it is worth enjoying at least once. I probably wouldn't buy it again but it's enjoyable to drink.
