Pours a thick black. No head formation whatsoever. I figured that would be the case with a 18% brew.
Nose is malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, a touch of spice, cinnamon it seems, and booze as it warms. This is utterly fascinating. It reminds of a Belgian Dark or Strong Ale with its brown sugar and fig/raisin/prune notes. So interesting.
Taste follows the nose. Sweet brown sugar, dark fruits, spice, booze. This 18% ABV keeps itself very restrained. This tastes great, but it just doesn't taste like a stout. There is no bold roasty quality that is indicative of the style. Take that as you will.
Mouthfeel is fullbodied with a sticky viscous quality. Minimal carbonation. Smooth and dangerously drinkable.
Overall this brew was not at all what I had expected. This thing looks like a stout, but has none of the characteristics. Despite all of that it still is great. A Belgian Dark masquerading as a Russian Imperial. Strange, but very interesting.
