Coven is full bodied, roasty, and with just enough malty sweetness to balance out the finishing bitterness. Aromas of coffee and chocolate precede your sip, with more subtle notes of caramel on the palate.

From a 16oz can, gifted from my beer-loving daughter Caitlin.... Canned 03/02/2021....
This suckah is an oily, dark, black hole of a beer. Has a nice, rich, creamy beige head, which sits at about 1/4" and lingers. The foam sticks well to the glass and stays there. Smell is of dark choco, espresso and roasty malts. Body is nicely medium to medium-plus, with a silky smooth feel.
Taste has lightly sweet malts, with caramel, dark choco and more espresso. Has a bit of cocoa and some roasty, charred notes. After all that malty semi-sweetness, it finishes with a surprisingly floral hop hit. Quite nice, overall! Prosit!!

16 ounce can poured into a tulip.
Canned 3/2/21
Decent RIS. Big rich and roasty flavor with some caramel sweetness and a bitter roasty and hoppy finish. The medium-full body is soft and viscous. Alcohol flavor is a bit sharp.

Canned on 03-02-21.
A - Dark brown pour that's borderline black with thick creamy, caramel colored lacing and head resting on top.
S - Chocolate malt, toasted cocoa, and light charcoal.
T - Sweet dark chocolate, toasted cocoa, some underlying char, and a nice lingering chocolate roastiness with light chocolate bitterness and some alcohol presence.
M - Big, viscous, silky soft body that's sticky on the lips with some pricklies and dryness on the back of the tongue.
O - There's a little bit of harshness here but overall it's a nice Stout.

Pouring from can # 0263/5000 from March 2021-- this fills the glass with a nightmare black liquid, with a light froth of foam. Oddly, there is little aroma to me; everything is in taste. I taste a lightly roasted molasses and chocolate. There is a brief dance with caramel that turns into more chocolate. For a Russian Imperial Stout, this masks its' alcohol, reserving everything for the flavor department. A well-done, easy to down RIS.

16oz can from Tavour. Dark brown with a few faint swirls of fine bubbles. Aroma of roast malts with a hint of chocolate. Taste is more of the bitter, roasty malts, mild sweetness, cocoa. Simple, straight forward, hits the spot.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a short beige head that left some specks of bubbles down the sides of the glass, a narrow collar around the edge, and some delicate lacing on the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of dark chocolate and coffee are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that it also has notes of roasted malts in the finish and a moderate amount of bitterness contributed by the hops.
M: It feels nearly full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is dryness in the mouthfeel - particularly the finish.
O: This Russian Imperial Stout isn't nearly as roasty and dry compared to other beers in the style. It also does a rather good job at hiding nearly all of the alcohol from the taste.

Can dated March 2021 (and NUMBERED - number 3428/5500 so I guess it's a limited release of 5500 cans) into pint glass. Apparently a reincarnation of an earlier Coven (Ghost 861). Anyway, this one pours a very dark brown (SRM 36-39) with a slight ruby cast to it. Essentially no head, but thin lacing on the glass. Initial impression is dominated by roasted or even burnt malts, with dark chocolate, coffee, and a bit of dark fruits. Becomes more complex as it warms, with a slight sweetness moderating the burnt/bitter characteristics. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky. No attempt to hide the alcohol - it's right in your face from the beginning. Finish is fairly bitter and boozy. Overall, this is a great RIS - just straight-up brewed to style, unapologetic, and tasty as hell!
