We made this originally for our 8-year anniversary, and we have decided to revamp it in a similar vein to the recent Djinn + Future You Hates You. This one is a full bodied dark stout with notes of roast, coffee + dark chocolate. Bitterness is balanced against the booziness, all of which is enveloped in a rich, bold body and creamy mouthfeel; subtle traces of caramel + treacle appear as the beer approaches cellar temperature.

Adroit Theory Confessions (Ghost: Confessions) RIS, 16.66% ABV. Pours thick like 10 weight oil, and dark black, with a ring of brown bubbles that left no lacing. Aroma is roast malt, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is roast malt, coffee, char, moderately sweet, equally bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Goes down way too easy given the octane.

A: perhaps the darkest beer I've poured. Drop black, like liquid obsidian. A very fairly brown head gently forms.

S: brown bread, and brown sugar.

T: sweet with caramel, bread, boyfriend sugar and a hint of coffee. Finish is long and lingering with vanilla bean, and creme brulee.

M: thick and viscous, with light carbonation. Silky, and oily simultaneously.

O: this is a monster of a beer, and fuck me it's good.

Pour is darker than stout black with a very dark brown dense head that is impressively tall yet leaves no lacing.
The taste, well, it isn’t a proper RIS, simply much to smooth and sweet. However, it’s freaking delicious. So much dark chocolate and mild coffee. Rich and smooth.
The feel is properly viscous , needs to have body to carry the flavors.
OA, as long as you are not set on a “proper” RIS, this is an exceptionally tasty stout. Darned near a pastry stout.

Confessions (Ghost Confessions) from Adroit Theory. Received from their website 19/03/25. 16 fl oz can, $ 7.50 (Including tax)/ $ 0.469/fl oz. Reviewed 21/04/25 (Review 3510). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Stored in at 39 degrees F at home: served at 57.0 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 60.4 degrees F.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Deep Brown (SRM 30), nearly opaque.
Body – Deep Brown (SRM 30), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Average (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), high density, Windsor tan, average retention. It recedes to a 0.3 cm crown and thin partial cap, fed by continuing lively carbonation.
Lacing – Fair – the mere presence of lacing is surprising at 16.66% ABV. A cloud bank of tiny to near-microscopic bubbles arcs above the crown. This will open into torn curtains.
Aroma – 4 – Mild roasted malt with hints of chocolate and char. No yeast, no hops, no alcohol.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins slightly sweet. Roasted malt, chocolate, and a mild smokiness similar to kippered herring. No yeast, no hops. No alcohol (16.66 % ABV, according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Moderate long-lived gastric warming occurs.
Palate – 4 – Full: creamy: soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.

Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container) Typical unsigned symmetric metal label art. This is a good but not outstanding take on the Russian Imperial Stout. Some roasted malt, chocolate predominating, smoke, beginning and ending slightly sweet.

L: Pours like motor oil, with a dark fudge color. Thick and viscous. Forms a moderately robust espresso head, fairly slow-forming but active. Some dark tan retention on the surface and a ring of lacing around the edge. Held to the light, an opaque dark chocolate hue.

S: Strong notes of baker's chocolate, roasted malts, char, and light coffee. Perhaps a hint of hops.

T: Very smooth and decadent for the ABV. Plenty of char, cacao nibs, baker's chocolate, and roasted malts. Fainter notes of coffee, burnt sugar, and a light creaminess.

F: Full-bodied. Slick, oily, silky mouthfeel. Little heavier on the tongue. Faint carbonation.

O: For the ABV, this RIS is dangerously drinkable.

Canned on: ??????

A - Pitch black pour with dense, thick, burnt toffee lacing that clings to the sides of the glass and lots of viscosity and legs.

S - Chocolate aroma with some char and a little bit of cream.

T - This is where this beer really shines, much bolder than the aroma with chocolate char, chocolate roast, some burnt notes along sweet chocolate notes. Ends with a lingering charred chocolate bitterness with a hint of sweet chocolate and lactose.

M - Slippery, silky body that leaves a sticky residue on the lips. Warming on the way down is minimal based on the big ABV of this beer.

O - This is really well done with huge lingering chocolate notes and an incredibly well-hidden ABV. Recommended.
