This is a 16oz can purchased in cold storage.
Appearance: The body is black and it has a very oversized dark brown head with roiling foam that creates large bubbles popping through a foamy surface. It leaves no lacing and the churning eventually subsides to a short cap that continuously replenishes and pops with a very high visible carbonation level.
Aroma: Through the CO2 burn there is a bit of burnt aroma that comes through. A light dusting of cocoa powder comes out as well.
Taste: A slightly smokey flavor of carbon comes through and towards the middle there is a very light bit of chocolate brownie. There is a very light hint of wintergreen mint in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: It is medium-bodied with a medium bitter char from the grains which is nice. It is enjoyable to drink.
Overall: As a whole it just felt like an average attempt at a Baltic Porter although the body felt higher than usual. The label states that this is "Brewed with Juniper & Saskatoon Berriers [sic] and Black Maple Syrup infused with Mountain Sorrel & Mint" and aside from some of the mint in the aftertaste there was nothing else that was noticeable in the flavor or aroma. Maple syrup is usually very prominent in beers but here they've somehow managed to hide it. Sorrel is another interesting ingredient that I enjoy every Christmas but it was absent. It's odd that they managed to hide juniper berries too because that's a very overwhelming ingredient. It feels like this beer was brewed without any of the listed ingredients.
It's not a beer I would recommend or buy again because it's basically just an average quality Baltic Porter that happens to have a heavier body.
