Let's give Off Color mega-credit for trying.
Of the eight active saisons in the Predator Line, 2nd and 3rd with number of ratings have around 92% fewer BA ratings than Apex Predator's 1,079 ratings. Of course, the other six saisons have even fewer. To me, this means the recipe that led to Apex probably cannot be improved on. Yet OCB keeps trying, and Juicy is now the ninth active experiment.
I'm speculating that OCB wanted to try double-hopping a Predator and that Trident allowed them to do that. Good guess from a malt-head? But even if I'm correct, that will not improve on Apex; a far more food-friendly and versatile brew than Juicy and its competition.
Juicy Looks like dishwater compared to Apex and barely average for a saison. Juicy Smells more like a saison, as much malt as fruit. Tastes are balanced, except at the end the hops try to steal the show. Tingly, but still a tad thin in my mouth.
For my standard test of food-friendliness by pairing saisons with my world-famous soup, Apex still gets an A and I'd give Juicy a B-. I will test Juicy against pesto/pasta sometime soon. If Juicy can't cut through the oil and let the basil play, then I conclude Juicy is an experiment not worth repeating.
4/29/23 Because I never made it to The Mousetrap for Saison Day, my penance is to do another side-by-side with Daddy Apex. And it was with pesto as programmed above. And Apex still gets an A and Juicy still gets a B-. For me to give a totally fair comparison, the two should have the same malt bill and they don't (Juicy has flaked oats instead of Honey Malt.) And with pesto and dry cheese needing some fruit to sweeten the palate, Apex remains at the top of the food chain. Again.... a sign of OCB's intent for trying to improve on Apex, but no cigar.
5/26/23 Had a second copy, same test against Apex. I was planning to give away the rest of Juicy, but then I discover there is another rendition with Sultana hops. Think I'll hold a copy for that.
